    HP Envy dv6 dropping the LAN and WIFI connection

    Hello,

    A friend of mine just bought a HP Envy dv6-1148ca and the LAN and WIFI keeps dropping out.
    He has re-installed Windows 8 twice with the same results.

    System specs:
    Windows 8 64bit
    AMD A8-4500M
    8GB RAM DDR3 800MHz
    750 GB HDD
    AMD Radeon HD 7640G
    Ralink RT 3290 802.1 bng WIFI adaptor - Driver v5.0.2.0 Date:2012-08-08
    Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller - Network adapter, Driver v8.3.730.2012 Date:2012-07-30

    Searches showed others with HP laptops having the same issues, no one seems to find an answer to this problem.

    Secure sites seem to be more stable, but do drop out.
    Some sites won't start at all, others start but drop out after 1-3 hours.

    We have reset the Power Management to not 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' and still the same.
    Other laptops on same network are having no problems, including other HP laptops, different models.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    You might be barking at the wrong tree. There might be an IP conflict. Try doing a power cycle on both modem and router. Unplug both. Wait for 30sec. Then plug the modem back in and wait till it completely boots up. Then plug the router back in. Let me know if that works.

    Does it completely loses connection when dropped out?

    This is similar on a Pavilion DV7 of mine but the newer Envy DV6 7250 doesn't drop at all... can't say that for sure but during the past moths since I use it, it never dropped. I do know that 4 BIOS updates were installed (many updates) here but you should always see the change-log to see what it's fixed or not.

    Just to clarify things: Pavilion DV7 uses Windows 7 and Envy DV6 uses Windows 8 here.

    What I see on the Pavilion is that the power options, as you said, are set to enable the device but still: the network adapter disappears from Device Manager and the notification area.

    If I run the network drivers installer on the pavilion, it will say that the network adapter is unavailable and if deep sleep mode is enabled it will need to be disabled. Pretty weird that deep sleep mode: it isn't any of the options you see in Windows power management, the BIOS settings also need to be checked. The worst case scenario is something in the firmware of the adapter itself, and by chance they will release some updates (I remember the DVD drive got newer firmware for the dv6 but not the network).

    Whenever the adapter isn't available in the notification or device manager: go to device manager and scan for newer hardware or refresh the list of devices and the missing adapter will reappear. EDIT: this one is a realtek family adapter as well... look for deep sleep mode.

    However I do encounter some sort of drop off on (envy) the Windows 8 Store but after a reload of the page all works and I'm still connected. The desktop browsers don't have this and my wireless never failed so far.

    I didn't find where to disable the deep sleep mode yet.

    Hello, the deep sleep mode setting is in the BIOS too. On my Acer HTPC, it is under Power Management Setup>>>Deep Power Off Mode then Enable/Disable

    I came across this when I enable the Wake On Lan feature of my Acer HTPC so that I can turn the power on using my android smartphone. If the PC is on deep sleep mode, WoL will not work.

    Cheers!

    Me too. If it's the same issue I experience, it's not limited to HP, but unfortunately I've been unable to get to the bottom of it.

    When the internet connection drops with me, all you can see by monitoring network traffic is ARP requests sent from the computer to the router, but the router doesn't reply. I also find that it's not possible to log in to the routers admin page and if I try to ping the router it just shows 'destination host unreachable' or 'request timed out'. Loopback/local host is the the only thing you can ping. (Bear in mind this is with hard-wired ethernet cable, not wireless).

    After anything from 20 seconds to a few minutes, the router comes back on-line itself and everything is back to normal. Because it's not possible to access to the router when it happens, it's not possible to see what's going on without going to the effort of trying to monitor the network traffic between the router and the telephone exchange (which isn't really practical) and even then, you only have a short time window for diagnoses.

    Certainly odd. When it happens with you, can you still ping the router?

    ETA: Just for added irony, it's just done it whilst replying to this thread.

    @fourthofjuly
    Other laptops on the same router and wireless are not having any problems.
    Router and WIFI have been restarted several times.
    Still the same issues.
    Belkin N600DB wireless.
    Thanks

    @Hopachi
    Doesn't completely loose connection, some site drop out, some don't. HTTPS site seem to be more stable.
    It's the Pavillion model, Will check the BIOS updates.
    Will check for the deep sleep mode.
    Thanks

    @ARC1020
    Will try to ping the router when it happens again.
    Thanks

    Thanks for mentioning this. The name 'deep sleep' is not referred anywhere in the HP BIOS but however, there is:
    System Configuration -> LAN Power Saving which is set to enabled by default and I really think this one is what we're looking for here.

    Cheers!

    Another possibility, ask your friend if he installed a Bonjour service. It's a networking application by Apple which is suppose to simplify device discovery but have actually plagued me before and messed up my network setup. If so, try uninstalling it. Another thing too look at is the driver version. Could be for 32-bit system.

    @Hopachi
    Will check the LAN Power saving in BIOS.

    @fourthofjuly
    He does have Bonjour installed, if the above doesn't help then will uninstall it.

    Thanks all
