Static IP = DNS server not responding

Hey gang, hopefuly somebody can help me with this:

I have a Win8 x64 rig with a wireless card connecting to Linksys router connected to a cable modem. I also have Hamachi and Teamviewer installed, they add their own setup to the network page, don't know if they are the culprits but with DHCP I have no problem.

Everything works well until I try to set up a static IP on my PC (if I enable DHCP for IPv4 - no prob).

What I did: Set a static IP to avoid conflict with other PCs, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (auto fills), gateway = my router's IP (192.168.1.1), DNS servers = took from my ISP's site (also tried Google public DNS).

What happens: my PC connects to the wifi as I can browse the router's settings page. But any website I try to access leads to a DNS server not responding. It has been driving me crazy... As soon as I reset back to obtain IP automatically everything works.

You should assign the local static IP in your router, not in your PC. I don't use linksys router but there must be a section called "LAN" settings and that's where you assign local static IP for each of your devices

This might be a completely stupid question, but how exactly do I tell my router which PC is mine? I found an advanced routing page with a static routing option, which has a dropdown for 10 ip's where for each i need to set:
  • destination lan ip
  • subnet mask
  • default gateway
  • interface (lan & wireless OR wan)

There is no place for setting my wifi card's MAC address on that page, which is the only to specifically reference my PC.

Is your Wifi Card connected and active ?

Every device must have its own MAC Address. When you assign a local static IP for a device in your router, it will bind that local IP address to its MAC Address. That's all you need to do.

Here's an example of my LAN SETUP with NETGEAR so every time I turn on a device, i always get the same address for that device. Since I use Dynamic DNS with Port Forwarding to access my devices when I am away, they all have to be fixed local IP's.

You should be having no problems using IPv4 to set up static IP's and DNS servers.

One way to get around this problem is using DHCP reservation on your router which is very similar to having static IP's, this way each machine has a repeatable IP but DHCP is still functioning so no chance of giving out the same IP twice.

I've read plenty about static DNS settings not working with Windows 8, apparently Hamachi is the soul cause of this problem, I've been reading about this problem occurring on Windows 8 machines on a regular basis when using Hamachi.

From what I have read it may help to either uninstall and reinstall Hamachi or install the latest version which may work correctly with Windows 8 but no guarantee's as I haven't found a working solution as yet.

There are several links to this effect around the internet, this problem came up months ago, read to the second page. :)
