Solved Problems connecting with network devices

Hi,

I'm having trouble connecting my wifi printer (Canon pixma mg3100) and my Lacie Network Space on Win8, while I haven't experienced any problems connecting these same devices to my Win7 computers.

The driver for the printer is, according to Canon, compatible with windows 8.

When I install the software on both my windows 7 laptops, it immediately recognize the network and after 5 minutes I can print wireless without any problems.

However when I try to install the same software on my win8 computer it keeps asking to first plugin a usb cable and do a lot of manual steps, like pressing several buttons on the printer, it's ridiculous! After a while the software succeeds in finding my Wifi but it keeps on saying 'unable to connect'

Same story for the Nas. (and problably for all network devices)

My win8 laptop is a brand new Dell Inspiron and I didn't change any network settings.

Am I missing something here?

Raymond

Hi,

Thanks for replying!

I already have the latest drivers, I'm certain this has something to do with the network configuration on my (win8) laptop because everthing works just fine on my win7 laptops (with the same win7/8 drivers)

From Microsoft site: " If your printer is a network or wireless printer that is already on your home network, no other work is required."
My wireless printer is already on my home network, since it works perfect with windows7...

Did you try setting up a Homegroup between the Windows 7 and 8 machines?

Do you have any type of third party anti virus software installed on the Windows 8 machine?

I would think about disabling Avast or configuring it to allow printer sharing. Just the other day it was the Norton firewall causing this same problem with a Network printer.

Setting up a Homegroup may also help.

If it were me I'd dump Avast and set up a Homegroup between those machines, it's very likely the problem would be solved in a few minutes.

But if I set up a homegroup, my old pc has to be turn on before I can print something? I'd rather work without homegroups and let every pc connect to the printer (and nas) separately if possible :)

I'll try turning off avast.

Thanks for your help so far!

Homegroups has no effect on this.

Is this printer plugged into another machine for some reason? If so that would be incorrect, you need to plug the printer into either a switch or the router.

No, it's a wifi printer, so I'm intended to use it that way :)

Maybe helpful to know that I'm unable to ping my NAS On my win8 laptop.

Ps. Turning off avast didn't do the trick.

WiFi printer ok then, there are usually some directions for setting up the printer using USB first, then changing to WiFi only after it's set up.

Homegroups won't have a requirement to have the other PC turned on in order to print, setting up a Homegroup won't hurt anything here.

Everything works fine now, Win8 laptop was in a different network (I don't know why). I did a ipconfig /release + renew. Now both my laptops are in the same network and both my printer and NAS are recognized immediately. Thanks for the help!

Different network, that is strange and can't really happen unless two routers were being used with DHCP not disabled on one of them or there was a static IP set up in the IPv4 properties, I guess I should have checked the ipconfig/all on both machines. :)

I only have one router and all pc's are set to dhcp :) before I did a ipconfig /renew I even had to set my win8 laptop to static as the network address was totally different compared to the rest of the network (192.168.1 instead of 192.168.0). I think it was using the wan network instead of the lan :)

Well the WAN is to the outside world so doesn't figure into this unless this machine was connected directly to the modem somehow.

If you had to set a static IP just to be on the same subnet then something is wrong with the router's settings or DHCP wasn't turned on in the IPv4 properties of the network adaptor for this machine.

Very strange problem either way and I'm not really sure how this can happen but glad you figured it all out. :)

Hi Chev, sorry to bother you again but I still have one issue :) My win8 laptop works perfectly with the network devices now that I set the IP range to 192.168.1.XXX. (with a ipconfig /release - /renew) But now my win7 laptop is assigned to another range (192.168.0.XXX). Those ranges switch when doing a ipconfig /release - /renew on the laptop with the false range. So there's only one laptop at the time that works correctly. Both laptops are configured with DHCP and are in the same subnet. Do you know what could be the issue here? Thanks!

Like I mentioned earlier, there has to be something wrong with the router or modem, you may be using a router/modem combo then you are plugging your regular router into this, that is about the only way this problem could occur.

You really need to post the ipconfig/all from these machines, and the model number of the modem and router you are using because I can only guess without more information. :)

You can see the two different gateways here very clearly, your modem is in fact a modem/router then you are plugging that into another router, this set up is fine provided that you turn OFF DHCP on one of the routers. You also need to plug the router/modem into the LAN port "not WAN port" of the secondary router.

Usually just turning off DHCP on the secondary router is best, so you would need to go into your TP-link router settings at 192.168.1.1 and turn off DHCP. This way only the first router is handling DHCP so all machine will be receiving an IP in the correct subnet.

After that your TP-link router will receive an IP from the first router in the correct subnet of 192.168.0.x etc. And anything connecting to the TP link router will also receive an IP in the correct subnet.
