I am running Windows 8 x64 on an Intel DX48BT2 motherboard. The Network adapter is a built-in INtel 82566DC-2.
Simply put, WOL works fine as long as I don't let the computer sit in sleep mode for too long. However, if I let it, for example, sit overnight, then it cannot be woken with a magic packet in the morning. Right now, in device manager, the settings under power management for the network adapter
1. Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
2. Allow this device to wake the computer
3. Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer
If I look, for example, at my mouse's settings (which is able to wake the computer no matter how long it has been in sleep mode), it shows this:
1. (Grayed out and unchecked) Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power)
2. Allow this device to wake the computer
Presumably, I want the network adapter to be more like the mouse in that the computer NEVER turns off the device and that the device is allowed to wake the rest of the computer. However, it isn't that simple.
If I uncheck the box, to Allow the computer to turn off the network adapter to save power (like it is in the mouse), then the other 2 boxes become grayed out (but still checked). When I test WOL in this state, it doesn't work no matter what.
It doesn't make sense to me that the computer would turn off the device to save power, and yet somehow, this device is supposed to be able to wake the computer while it itself is sleeping.
Under the driver tab, it says that I have a driver signed on 9/27/2011 (version 9.13.41.1). Updating the driver produces no results. As best I can tell, this is as good as it gets for my 4 year old motherboard.
Does anyone have any idea why WOL stops working after a while but can be reenabled for a short while if you wake the computer by other means (and then put it back to sleep, of course)?
