Cannot connect to Internet through peer-to-peer connection

I sometimes tether to my smartphone (HD2, running Windows Mobile 6.5) with an app called WMWiFiRouter, which creates a wi-fi hotspot using the 3g connection of the phone.

Despite "router" being in the app's name, it sets the connection up as a peer-to-peer (adhoc) network.

This works with computers I have used it with running Windows XP and Windows 7. It also works with an Ipod Touch and Ipad I have.

However, so far I cannot get it to work on my new Windows 8 laptop. It connects to the adhoc network, but reports it as having "No Internet Access" (although other computers and devices can connect to the Internet through it), and indeed, one cannot connect to any web site, nor read e-mail, etc., with the Win8 computer when connected to my tethered wi-fi network.

I tried turning off the Windows Firewall. Didn't help. Same problem.

Does anyone reading have an idea, how I can get the Windows 8 laptop (Lenovo X230) to connect to the Internet through the adhoc network of my smartphone, as my Windows XP and 7 computers can, and other devices?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Problem still unresolved. I hope that someone can help.

In case the following info would be helpful, the Windows 8 laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad X230.

The wireless adapter is Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205.

Thanks in advance for your help with this problem.

I would think the app would handle the IP assignment unless the NIC isn't picking up the IP for some reason.

It might also help to turn on connection sharing in the NIC properties in Device Manager>Network adaptors.

You might want to check the ipconfig/all on the Win8 machine to see if it's picking anything up from the phone or maybe setting up a static IP in IPv4 properties would help. :)

It should help to install the latest drivers from the Lenovo web site as the Windows update drivers often times won't have all the options working.

For Intel the newest version is dated Jan 29 2013

Version
: 15.5.6000.1657/15.5.6.48

Drivers and software - ThinkPad X230

People on other forums say to do this. :)

1. Turn on Internet sharing on the phone and also on the wireless NIC on the machine "very important". This is why updating the drivers is important, some drivers don't have the sharing option.

2. On pc connect to the wifi network (it will say limited connection)
3. Right click on the connection to view connection properties and select the security tab. Click on advanced and then tick the checkbox for "Enable Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) compliance for this network.

Or this one looks promising.

Right good news for you all, I fixed it...........

I hear you asking how ????

After a lot of digging and reading up it turns out that Windows 8 wifi drivers are normally installed on the Windows 8 OS and basically that's the issue, all you need to do is download the correct driver for your wifi device and install, you may be able to roll back your driver if not just upgrade to a non Microsoft version.

I read this somewhere and it worked for me after days of trying.

And also very importantly this.

FIX for Surface RT:

I have the HTC 8x and Verizon. I often have problem connecting and was unable to use the FIPS option above. Instead I found that if I set static DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (google's DNS servers), then I have no problems using the internet sharing. Otherwise, I have a connection but nothing resolves.

So, I think the problem is in the gateway not using the DNS server properly. If you have previously been successful with FIPS would you mind unchecking it and trying this instead?

To set your DNS, you will need to open the connection properties and open "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and at the bottom check "Use the following DNS server addresses". You can use any address but I used Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Thanks for all the info, chev65. I have tried several of the things you mention. may try others.I do have the newest drivers installed, including the one you list. I have tried setting DNS to both Google DNS and Open DNS. Didn't help. I tried tinkering with advanced adapter settings too, didn't help. I will look at some of the other suggestions. Thank you,

By the way, why were all the carriage returns stripped from my last post above, when they appeared in my OP, and also in the reply by chev65? That makes posts diffiult to read, all one long run-on paragraph. (Using Firefox 19.02)

In looking more carefully at your suggestions, chev, I notice that I have already tried every single one of them, except for one, the one about FIPS compliance. So I tried that. I right click on the wireless network adapter (while connected to the adhoc network), choose properties, but there is no security tab. There is a sharing tab, so I chose to share the connection, which I hadn't before. That did not help, it still does not connect to the Internet. (Of course internet sharing is enabled on the phone, or I would not have such a network at all.) That security tab probably only comes with certain adapters, not this one.

Well, I tried "sharing the computer's internet connection" again, disabled and re-enabled the adapter, connected to the adhoc network, and presto, it worked!I don't understand it, because it is the phone that is sharing its internet connection, not the computer. But that did the trick here. Thanks.

Yes apparently the connection sharing feature works both ways. Thanks for reporting back in. :)

Unfortunately, it doesn't work again. And the connection on the win8 computer is still marked as shared. As before, it connects to the adhoc connection, but marked as "Limited", with no internet access. Whereas, also as before, other computers and devices can connect fine to the internet through that connection.I don't know why it worked for a little while, then stopped working again. No settings have been changed since it worked.Any other ideas?

Maybe I should ask if there is any type of third party Anti Virus software or firewall's installed on this machine?

Can you post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all?

Nope, no antivirus software on it at all. I just did a clean install of Windows 8 on it, installed the necessary drivers (including the newest one for that adapter), and have not yet installed any kind of security software. I think I wrote that I tried turning off the Windows Firewall, but that didn't do that.I could do the screen shot of ipconfig/all, later, no time right now. Or if you would like me to look for particular lines in it, I could do that and report back. Thank you.

It turns out it was a driver problem.Although I had the newest wi-fi driver installed from the Lenovo site, i found a newer one on the Intel site, just a couple days old, installed the new one, and now no more problems with connecting to the Internet from the adhoc connection.Still one minor problem though. Every single time I connect to the adhoc network I am asked for the WEP password? Why isn't it remembered, and why does the network not connect automatically as I set it? (It connects automatically to that network, remembering the password, on my WinXP and Win7 computers, and even my Idevices, but not from this Win8 computer.) Will Win8 not connect automatically, and not remember the password, for an adhoc network? Anything I could do to fix that?

Well I did my best with the drivers but if Lenovo can't even put out a working driver I'm not sure what else I could do, the Intel driver from a few days ago wasn't even out when I made my last post.

I don't know why it asked for a WEP password when you should most definitely be using WPA2 security with AES encryption, these security settings are also required for wireless n to work at it's rated speed. :)

Well, as said, the new driver did solve the main problem of connecting to the Adhoc network. Major improvement! It is a little hassle though, that it does not connect automatically, and I have to enter the password each time.

The reason I have to enter a WEP (and not WPA) password, is that is how the network is set up. The app WMWiFiRouter on the WM phone will only set a WEP password, not WPA. But that is not the cause of the problem (WEP). As said, my other computers running WinXP and Win7, and my two idevices, all connect automatically to that adhoc network, and remember the password.

What can I do to get the new Win8 laptop to be able to connect automatically to that network, and remember the password? Anyone have any idea what is going on? Thanks.
