On my home network there are W8-A, W8-B and W7 machines. There is no problem networking among these machines except from W8-A to W7. The shared folders on the W7 are displayed on W8-A but if I attempt to click-open any one of them no ID/PW is asked for and the following message is displayed:

"You do not have permission to access . . . . . Contact your network administrator . . . "

W8-A <--> W8-B OK
W8-B <--> W7 OK
W8-A <-- W7 OK
W8-A --> W7 NG

W8-B and W7 are logged in by the same ID and password, but W8-A is logged in by a different ID and PW.
I can open any folder of the W7 from W8-A *if* W8-A is logged in by the same ID and PW as for W7/W8-B.

I wonder what could be wrong. Any idea?

Are you certain that the C:>Users folder on the W7 machine is shared? Also make sure that the time/date are set the same on all machines as this will cause access problems.

Setting up a Homegroup between these machines would most likely eliminate all file access problems without the requirement to use the same User name and password.

Thanks for your response.
My statement as follow is incorrect:
Windows 8-B and W7 are logged in by the same ID and password, but Windows 8-A is logged in by a different ID and PW.
"but Windows 8-A is logged in by a different ID and PW" is actually "but Windows 8-A is logged in by a different ID but the PW is the same as others".
I changed the PW to one being unique for the ID used to log in W8-A and the problem is resolved. I did this for trouble shooting purpose but still do not know why the same PW caused the problem. Could anyone explain why?

Please note that the situation for the W8-B was the same but there was no problem accessing W8-B before changing the PW.

Not sure. On which machine(s), if any, did you have password protected sharing on originally? Especially was it turned on for the Win7? Maybe this condition could explain the "why" of it. Maybe Windows 8-A --> W7 now works because password protected sharing in on for the Win7 and 8-A now has both different ID and password than W7.

Password protected sharing is on for all three computers all along. Only change made was the PW to log in W8-A. Before that PW was the same for logging in to any of the three computers.
Please note that there was no problem accessing W8-B even before changing the PW to log in W8-A. The same ID/PW is set both for W8-B and W7.

Yes, I understand. The significant change you made was that you fixed things so that, as said above, 8-A now has both different ID and password than W7. That, along with password protected sharing being on for W7, probably is what made your change work.

Thanks for your comments. What I learned is it sometimes does not work and how to fix it.

You are very welcome. Yes, if you can do at least that, then that's pretty good when things get complex under Windows sharing. One thing to keep in mind, I think, is that password protected sharing is sort of a strange creature. Ignoring Macs, I have three computers on my network--two Win7's and one Win8. All have different user names and passwords, and password protected sharing is on for each of them. At the outset, I had to use user names and passwords to share back and forth. But, then, things changed. User names and passwords became no longer required. I think I saw somewhere that this behavior is common. But, it is not without risk if, for example, one computer doesn't require a password. The Macs have always been consistent across the board--sharing to and from each other machine requires a user name and a password--unless accessing a public folder.
