only getting less than 2 meg down as opposed to 13

My new pc came yesterday

I did a little research and found that a i3 3220 ivybridge processor would fit the bill and not too expensive.

an asus P8H61-MX USB3 motherboard, windows 8 ready according to their website would again suffice and a 500 gb hdd would be more than ample for my modest needs.

Having gone that far I decided a case psu and dvd drive would be a good investment.

New wine in old bottles etc. :)

I found an online supplier who would supply this at an exceptional price.

So it arrived yesterday just before lunch, well packaged and undamaged.

I opened it up and the cheapish case looked ok.

Leaving my tea untouched, I quickly hooked up my monitor etc and put in the windows eight disk.

Well things were going too well up till now, the dvd drive began making a noise like a 1963 ford anglia with a dynamo bearing gone, and would not read at all.

Luckily I was able to butcher old pc and continue.

Got that all done and a quick phone call later it's validated and ready to rock.

At this point I popped the asus support disk into the drive, only to be met with a message, "asus support disk does not work with this operating system.

But anyway it's working, so after playing around I go to asus site and download all the updates I can and install them.

Everything seems ok now except the web connection, I am only getting less than 2 meg down as opposed to 13 in the old system.

So nothing ever goes smooth,

I downloaded lan, drivers, ethernet drivers from asus but didn't seem to help.

Sorry this is a bit garbled but wanting to get it posted before I go out in the hope of some suggestions when I return.

been searching t'net all afternoon, someone suggested avast as being prone to incompatabilities with 8,

so I disabled it for ten minutes, ran a speed test and lo and behold, 12,28 mbps. wow, happy days.

enabled avast again and would you believe it still 12.2 mbps.

computers are strange.

btw is 63 ms a reasonable ping

Some more info.

I restarted the pc and was back to 1.8 mbps so I uninstalled avast, switched on windows defender and restarted again.

Latest results are 13.22 mbps, which is about the best I ever had.

Hope this is helpful to someone else.

It is a well-known fact that Avast 7 is not 100% compatible with Windows 8; however, I am testing Avast 8 Beta 3 on one of my Windows 8 machines and it really is impressive and very lightweight on resources.

Ping to where? Ping times vary constantly based on network congestion, traffic, and the number of hops it takes to get to the destination and return a response.

That's quite a lot of information, thank you very much. I couldn't find windows defender mentioned anywhere, so it must be well down the list.

The Windows Defender testing is actually listed as Microsoft Security Essentials (I believe).
