    joining Domain

I recently Purchased Sony VAIO with pre loaded windows 8.

I am a student and I want to join the college Domain to work with Matlab etc.
But Windows 8 I have there is no feature to add to Domain.
My dealer told me I have to upgrade my OS to Windows 8 Pro

Is there a way out or I have to spend Extra bucks already tight on budget

Please guide me . It is urgent

I don't see a reply. Even though this is an old post, I'll try to close it out with a response.
Yes, you must have the Pro version, and yes it will cost you close to $100, maybe less for students.

Your might as well upgrade to 8.1 if your haven't. It is free.

BUT... be careful. Your upgrade registration must match the version you are running.
If you buy a 8.0 upgrade to Pro, apply that before you make the free upgrade to 8.1.

If you are already at 8.1, be sure to buy the 8.1 upgrade to Pro.

    I hope that is clear.

    Good luck.

I am having trouble trying to connect by Windows 8 system to a W2K domain. No matter what I do, I get an error telling that the user ID and password are incorrect. I have tried just giving the user and also given the domain and user ID, like this domain\userid. Any guidance is appreciated.
