I am at my wits end, any help would be appreciated.

I have two computers:

LOFT
mapped network drives M, N, O

BEDROOM
mapped network drives P, Q, R

if i am on the LOFT computer i can see all mapped network drives, M,N,O,P,Q,R

if i am on the BEDROOM computer i can see mapped network drives P,Q,R but not M,N,O
i click on M,N,O and it comes up with a windows asking for login and password and states the following,
"the system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request,
after I type in the info I can then see the drives

any clues as to what is going on?

thanks

Are both machines Windows 7 or 8?

Setting up a Homegroup may help with the drive access problem.

You could also try adding Authenticated or Everyone to the permissions on the Security tab of the drive but messing with the NTFS permissions would be a last resort for me.

This could also be an ownership problem but having to take ownership is a bit more extreme.

Both computers are windows 8 pro 64bit, I was also trying to run a homegroup basically for printer sharing and that wasnt working right either, I have all ready added authentication user permissions to the drives in question and that didnt help either.

thanks, any other suggestions out there?

If you can't set up a Homegroup between those machines then you have other problems elsewhere in the system or there is a third party anti virus involved here.

Other than that, adding Everyone to the permission list on the sharing tab and the Security tab of the drive should get you in.

I haven't seen anyone else in this forum with this strange error message> "the system cannot contact a domain controller to service the authentication request, although there are others with this same problem and it seems to relate to a Homegroup problem.

I can set a homegroup up but it just doesnt work right, only certain folders work, other don't.

I have all drives set up with same permissions on all computers including, everyone with full control.

I have actually 3 computers, one can see all drives on all computers but the other two computers can only see their own drives, it is weird.

I have been working on these issues for three days, checking firewall settings , etc and still nothing, I just keep getting the stupid domain controller cant be contacted.

Yes that is strange I agree, I would think this has something to do with the obtuse error message.

You should have access to all the folders that reside in the C:Users folder by default because the Users folder is shared with Everyone through the sharing tab by default in Windows 8.

Setting up a Homegroup should also give you access to the drives on those machines without even having to touch the NTFS security permissions.

If the Homegroup isn't working then there may be system files that have been corrupted, what does a scan with sfc/scannow command tell you?

Once those machines are in the Homegroup just go to the drive you want to share, right click to properties, sharing tab, Advanced sharing, click check box to share then check the Permissions tab, add check marks for read write access as desired.

In most cases it's safer to allow for sharing with the C:Users folder rather than sharing out the entire drive.

Once those machines are in the Homegroup sharing drives should be straight forward and simple, no need to touch the NTFS Security tab permission settings at all.

If the NTFS Security permissions have been messed with on those drives, it's best to return the original Security permission settings that the drive came with.

It's best to never touch the NTFS Security tab> Permission settings because it can create problems, especially with Windows 8.

You can get by without messing with the NTFS Security permissions by setting up a Homegroup or by down sharing with older Op systems using the Public folders.

It sounds like someone set up a computer as being on a Domain. Really need more information if you are using any servers, are these just workstations, or Windows OS being used as file share servers only.

You would only get the Domain controller error, when someone made some changes to a computer, making it think it is going to be on a domain, when it is not. This is not a DNS issue.
