..Can't see each other in the Homegroup. I troubleshooted, attempted to "wake" my desktop PC from my laptop (even though it wasn't asleep).

On the homegroup, each says their own hard drive is available, but the other one isn't...

On my MacBook:

On my HP Desktop:

(Donald Kimball is my brother's desktop, which my MacBook can also not access.)

Do you know why this is happening?

I'd go Boot Camping and get back to you, but I'm running Win7 both via Boot Camp and on both Win desktops. I have never had any problems going back and forth on these machines--network-wise. Let me know if you think there is a point to me going camping. Before Win8, did you have Win7 on the machines in question? If so, did you have networking problems? Also, I am having no problems, as I recall, between Boot Camp Win7 and old laptop Win8. Can't remember if I joined HomeGroup on the MBP/Boot Camp installation.

You might try making sure that all pertinent wake on demand type settings are on. In BIOS/UEFI too if pertinent.

No I haven't, I had the Win8 Developer/Consumer Preview for a while on BootCamp, but never attempted a HomeGroup share.

My desktop did at one time have Windows 7, but since then I've wiped the partition and did a clean install for 8.

I'm also not sure how to adjust wake on demand settings...mind pointing me in the right direction?

Look at the power management tabs for your network adapters in Device Manager > Network Adapters. Also, check your settings in Control Panel > Power Options > Change when the computer sleeps > Change Advanced Power Settings > Sleep. I haven't used the Sleep settings much, if ever, but you might be able to prevent something from happening that is causing your problem. Be sure you note the initial settings and how you change them carefully, if you do, so you can readily get back where your started. And, as mentioned, see if there is a wake up or sleep setting in your BIOS/UEFI.

Oops, above I said "making sure all wake on demand type settings are off." Not what I meant. If anything, you probably would want them on to wake when needed. Sorry. I am changing my misspeak above for clarity.

Was thinking about your situation. You might want to run an extreme power plan on the problem machine(s) to try to get a handle on what's up. When I don't want anything "to get in my way," I run:

You might want to make sure that the User folder is shared through the sharing tab on those machines. This is the default way of sharing with Windows.

You do not want to share out the entire drive, just the User folder is required.

When in doubt it's best to leave the Homegroup from all machines then set up a new one and rejoin the new Homegroup from all other machines.

Most other Homegroup problems can be fixed by following the steps in the link below.
