Windows 8 WiFi... solution ideas needed

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I purchased a Lenovo G580 running a Windows 8(x64) as a present for my little sister. But before presenting it to her on January 26, I decided to check it and install some things she'd need.
First boot already showed a problem: the WiFi module sees all available networks, connects to my home network, BUT the internet does not work (it did work on my desktop and two other laptops). I spent a lot of time reading this forum and googling the problem and discussing the topic on the lenovo forums. I tried pinging websites, and sometimes the ping went through, sometimes not. I also tried transfering files from my desktop to the G580 through the Windows home network and the speed was awfully slow. Here is what I have tried:

Reinstalling the drivers for the atheros/broadcom module (I have the Atheros AR9485WB-EG), older versions and latest version
Reinstalling Energy Management
Reinstalling chipset drivers (though not sure if they actually were reinstalled)
Installing Lenovo ReadyComm
Tried to uninstall MacAfee, but it wasnt installed in the first place, just a folder on the desktop for setup
Turning on/off all netwrok modules (LAN and blutooth)
Unchecked the box that allows the system to turn off the wifi module to save power !!!!!!!!!!!!!
REINSTALLING THE WHOLE WIN8 FROM RESCUE
Reinstalled the firmware on my router (tried both manufarcturer's and custom)
Tried unsecure (without password) connection
Tried to connect to other known WiFi networks without luck (same problem)
Manually configured the TCPIP settings, same problem

Danced around in shaman clothes and prayed to all gods

Nothing of the above helped. As a last try of hope I decided to make a LinuxLive USB and boot up a different OS (Kubuntu 12.10). So i did, booted the OS from my USB drive... and connected to my home network and INTERNET WORKS FINE!!! Booted Windows. Problem still there. So its not a hardware problem and the conclusion is: Its a Windows/driver/application problem. Now I have to find this problem and solve it before January 26th... For now I have only one idea: unistalling Windows 8, deleting all HDD sectors (including recovery sectors due to the GPT type) and installing Windows 7 Ultimate. But I want the laptop to have Win8. Any ideas are appriciated.

If I was you, I would remove all the useless preinstalled bloatware that Lenovo so kindly installed for you, especially the trial version of which ever anti virus they installed for you.

But first try running the following two commands "in bold" copy paste them one at a time into an elevated command prompt, hit enter after each one then reboot the machine. This will sometimes fix the problem where it's showing as connected but you can't seem to go anywhere using a browser.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Any type of preinstalled Virtual machines or VM ware like Hamachi should also be disabled. You should also disable the Msoft Virtual WiFi mini port adaptor which should be showing up in Device Manager under Network adaptors.

After that "assuming you have a connection" you should visit the Windows update center.

If you are still having problems after that, please post the ipconfig/all from this machine. :)

I'll expect my check in the mail from Lenovo. :)

Well, I used the Decrapifier and unistalled everything from Lenovo. I dont have any a/v software installed. I disabled all security stuff in Windows. No VM ware either. BUT, there is no Virtual Miniport in Dev Manager. Funny thing is, I managed to download updates from Windows Update center via the Wifi. Tried to reset winsock and TCP/IP stack running as admin... didn't help. Browsers still take me nowhere. Another interesting thing is that I have an unidentified device with hardware ID root/wdmirror that windows doesnt find drivers for (even with LAN cable plugged in & internet working.) Anyway, the OS is in Russian, so the ipconfig of the laptop is in Russian too... I am not sure if it will help, though I can translate it if you want (I am posting this from my desktop).

So you can get to Windows update and download and install updates but can't get anywhere else using the IE browser?

Have you tried changing the DNS servers in either the routers settings or the IPv4 properties of the adaptor you are connecting with?

You might want to go with Google's DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

The ipconfig/all would still be useful.

I istalled Chrome, cant bear IE... All attempts to open websites have been made through Chrome and a couple of tries through IE. I also just tried installing a torrent application to try downloading some files... Guess what? It downloads and the download speed is pretty much equal to my bandwidth. But browsers still take me nowhere... I get either the 105 or the 118 errors. I did try google dns in the adapter settings with no luck. I dont have any proxy settings.

Anyway, here is the ipconfig/all (launched cmd as admin (this was translated by me from Russian)):

So far I've been checking the Services, DNS client is running in auto and the Hosts file is fine. Tried flushing the DNS cahce. Got a call back from MS support, they told me to reset Win8 to default and in case it doesnt help contact Lenovo support... useless... Anyway, I am out of ideas... The adepter works fine. Connection to the internet is fine. DNS client is running and no security policies are blocking it. The only idea that remains is to install MS Network Monitor and see whats happening when I try to bring up a website. I am lost... DNS desnt resolve at all.

Return the machine. If at brick and mortar, and you want another of the same kind, then have them demo "your" new machine before your leave the store.

You will definitely want to uninstall any type of anti virus software like McAfee" which you said wasn't installed?

You are also showing the 'Virtual WiFi adaptor "WiFi Direct" Microsoft' as active so you might want to disable that in Device Manager.

All the Lenovo's lately have problems related to which ever A/V is installed, preventing everyone from going anywhere using any browser,...over and over and over again, the same problem occurs.

I'd run the McAfee remover tool none the less. Download McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 6.0.151.0 Free - Will remove all McAfee consumer products - Softpedia

A clean install using the Windows 8 CD would be my next option.

Thank you chev65, but I already installed a clean Windows 8. The problem appeared on the clean version too. I don't want to lose the warranty, so I cant install Win7 (the disk is GPT, and its impossible to transform it into MBR without deleting Win 8 rescue). As I've said before, WiFi works perfectly under Ubuntu. As for McAfee, it was not installed at all. I had a folder with installation files and a shortcut in the Charms menu. I deleted all McAfee-related files manually and than ran CCLeaner.

In any case, I had a conference call with MS support and Lenovo support... Both told me to return the machine :(. As far as I understood from the conference my case is actually the only ever filed to MS or Lenovo. I see no other options but to do so. Its an interestng case, and if I had more time I'd keep on cracking it, but my sister needs a birthday present...

I guess the thread can be closed now.

Thanks a lot guys!
