Panasonic Viera cannot find Win 8 Media Server

When I'm booted to Win 7 the TV finds the media server no problem, but in Win 8 on same machine it's Server Not Found. All the connections are Ethernet and the TV shows as connected in the router, so the problem is with Win 8. It's probably irrelevant but I have installed the Win 8 Media Center pack.

I have this problem with windows 8 and viera UT50.
First, I had the viera on lan and the PC on wifi. The viera could only see the media server in the moment that windows 8 is scanning for new devices. A minute later it disappears.
Then I moved the PC to wired, now it does not disappear, but when I try to access the contents, it stays in reading mode for some time then fails.
I have tried everything I can think of. Any ideas ?

It sounds like permissions again. Win 8 restricts access to the media folders on the Win 8 PC to users who have permission. Make sure first that each media folder you want to access has been shared, and then you may need to add a new user 'Everyone' and give it 'Read' permissions. You do all this via the folder Properties.

Did this to music, videos, pictures
Still the same issue. Viera can see a media server, when I try to list items it stays on "Reading" for a minute the displays "Connection to the server failed."

You did check that each folder has been shared?

I had the same problem. It turns out Eset's firewall was blocking mine.

Yes all were shared. I tried switching off windows firewall, still no success.
In the end I had to install serviio and it worked immediately without any issue. I would prefer to not use additional software but not sure how to resolve this.

I had the same problem. Turning off internet-connection-sharing on every network adapter(even the ones you are not using) somehow resolved it:
Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) - Microsoft Windows Help

I found the solution here:
Windows Media Sharing: "Network Device" not showing up. HELP!
