Hi there
Why does Windows Networking always seem to hose things up ( Linux works EVERY time)

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (W8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".

View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on W8 Computer

View from W8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but W8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't help at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of help ever.

I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.

Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.

I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.

Screenshots enc.

(Windows Networking Grrrhhhhhh! -- I'm not particularly technical with this stuff but any time I've used Networking with Linux it works STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX and there's no problem sharing from or to windows. !!)

Note -- Other W7 / Linux / XP computers connected to this SAME LAN (currently switched off) have NO problem accessing the server -- It's just this W8 Machine (W8 x-64 Enterprise version).

Thanks

Jimbo

Assuming this Windows 8 Enterprise machine isn't locked down with Group Policy.

This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parameters in order to get Windows 8 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 8 machines that needs to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

There are two separate settings for disabling the 128 bit encryption.

Hi there

Thanks

Solved -- added an XP machine as well --Its fine
now. Your trick solved the issue -- tested with an XP machine -- server down for updates at the moment -- but it's fine

All 3 machines on the lan can see each others disks etc . (W8/W7/XP combo)

scrshot enc.

Rep +1 for the solution --thanks -- I spent nearly 3 hrs one way or another messing around with this --wouldn't have found that solution in a million years.

I'm usually OK at "getting round" a problem -- but Networking is something else --now I see what these guys are paid for.

Cheers

Good deal Jimbo.

Yes this little problem has been around awhile. Of course if Msoft didn't add the extra security then people would complain that there are security leaks so no way to win for them.

I've seen those same settings fix quite a few Win 7 machines that also couldn't get into those older servers so this fix is universal and has been around quite awhile. TechNet has some threads about this.

Next time this problem occurs you will know right where to go.

I knew the answer after reading the second sentence in your post so all I had to do was copy paste from another old post that I had in favorites. :geek:

I'm afraid I don't know if it will solve the issue, but I did find a setting about 128 bit encryption in regular Control Panel.

In Control Panel, go to "Network and Sharing Centre", then "Change Advanced Sharing Settings".

On that Advanced Sharing screen, there are 3 collapsible sections for "Private", "Guest or Public" and "All Networks".

Within All Networks there is an option to turn off 128 bit encryption.

"you can fixed this yourself for now by forcing windows to make the network drives available to standart and administrator acounts:
1 - run regedit
2. - locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System
3 - create a new DWORD entry with the name EnableLinkedConnections and value 1.
4 - restart your computer
5 - now you can see and use network drives with these installers or applications."

This automatically mapped all my routers (3) and their drives

I'm still not sure what Jose was trying to do here.

Do these registry settings allow you to connect to a Domain with Windows 8 Home version?

So the registry adjustments are to correct a mapping drives or seeing drives problem, I wonder if those drives were connected to a Windows server as well.

You are a fuking genius! I just registered to say thank you for this solution cause I couldn't stream my mapped drive's vids on my smart tv, ever since I upgraded to win8 about 2 weeks ago! lol
for some reason I googled every solution there is and almost gave up, then thankfully found yours.
Thanks again dude.

Thanks for the comment Omar. Honestly this fix has been around since early in the Windows 7 releases.

Apparently those settings fix all sorts of USB drive access problems, not to mention the server access problems as well.

Thanks for reporting back in with your solution to this problem. :)

I wonder if you can help me, I have a thread on the network & sharing saying win 8 cannot see PVR which runs on Linux with Samba to be able to talk to windows machine. My win 7 laptop can see the PVR and show it by name, but the win 8 laptop cannot see the PVR by name. I have got around this by change the PVR IP to a static address, and access it by IP address, and mapping it to a drive. Works but clunky.
Have tried all the solutions shown so far in this thread, but none have worked so far. Does any body have any other ideas.
Thank you

Still no joy

Have tried all that, I just connect my computers and PVR through a modem router, using cable and wireless.
I will bring you up to date. Under network in explorer my win 7 laptop can see itself and the win 8 laptop and the PVR named VENUS. But under network in explorer the win 8 laptop can see itself and the win 7 laptop, it cannot see the PVR VENUS. With the win 8 laptop I can access the PVR "VENUS" by IP address and map the first folder it finds to a drive, which works ok, but I consider it a patch as win 8 complains if the PVR is not turned on, where as the way the win 7 finds the PVR when it is turned on is far superior.
Thank you

I'm still not sure what Jose was trying to do here.

Do these registry settings allow you to connect to a Domain with Windows 8 Home version?

No, that is KB937624 to prevent Local Security Authority [LSA] from implementing Microsoft's oxymoronic "Limited Administrator" concept by filtering the Administrators group token from the user memberships. It should be done for any Vista, Win7 or Win8 machine with a semi-competent user at the keyboard.
