I have one PC with windows 7 and a laptop with windows8. I have made two folders marked for sharing in PC with windows7 and also turned off password protected sharing in that PC. In windows 8 laptop I could see the folders, but can not access it. Both machines are in same workgroup "WORKGROUP". What should I do to access folders in windows 7 PC with read/write permissions in my laptop?

If you want to share those folders without having to bring down the NTFS permissions on the User folder, you can use the Public folders instead, just right click to Properties at C:>Users>Public >sharing tab, then put a check mark to enable sharing, permissions tab>add read/write/full access as desired, click apply, ok etc.

This is a much more secure way to share because the other network users will only have access to the folders you place in the Public folders.

If you require access to the entire User folder on the other machine you can use the same steps for the User folder although it may require edit/add "Everyone" at the advanced Security Settings tab.

If you are running a third party A/V software it may cause problems unless configured correctly. :)

I wanted to share not users sub-folder, but a different folder in d: drive. In windows7 I have enabled sharing for user and also for homegroup with read/write permissions. I could see them in network folder, but coukld not open it. But I don't see them in homegroup folder.
I am running McAfee AV. How to know whether it affects or not. How to solve it?

What is on your drives? Is the D drive an external? I would uninstall McAfee on general principles. It can be a problem with a variety of things. Check on the McAfee site to see if there is an installer. I don't trust uninstalling using Control Panel >Programs and Features or using C: > Program Files.

Thanks. D drive is in same HDD. Problem was solved after creating home group in windows7 with password of windows8 laptop. Using Homegroup, file transfer was easy.

Yes creating a Homegroup is the easy way to do this, I use Homegroups as well.

You were talking about sharing with the Workgroup so I was showing you how to do that without bringing down the NTFS permission settings. Using the Public files is a good way to share outside the Homegroup.

Glad you solved your problem. :dinesh:
