Changes in advanced sharing settings are not saving

I go into sharing center, advanced,etc then I turn on network discovery, click save changes, and I go right back in, and it didn't save? Any ideas what could cause this or how to fix it?

Are you running the Private network profile?

I believe I always have and always was able to see them. I changed it to "home" network to no avail.

It should say private. Where did you change something to home?

Computer properties, network ID. That's where I changed it

That's what I thought. I think it is OK how you changed it, but I would change it back to WORKGROUP. And, make sure your network is shown as private in the Network and Sharing Center. Restart your computer at this point. I am not sure why, especially if your network already was shown as private, you haven't been able to turn Network Discovery on for keeps. After restarting, try turning both Network Discovery and File Sharing on.

This problem usually occurs when certain Windows services that relate to networking are either turned off or not set to Automatic start up.

Check your Services. Ensure that the required services are Started on all the computers:
Go to Start\Control Panel\ Administrative Tools\ Services.

o Computer Browser
o DHCP Client
o DNS Client
o Network Connections
o Network Location Awareness
o Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
o Server
o TCP/IP Netbios helper
o Workstation

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.
To change the startup type, double-click on the service name and change accordingly.

This should do the trick.

Thanks, I tried starting the "Computer Browser" service, I got this error. (It was on auto as well).

"Windows could not start the computer browser service on local comuter. Error 1060: the specified service dos not exist as an installed device."

Sounds like you lost some system files along the way somehow.

You might try running the sfc/scannow command and see what it says.

We don't know much about your computer/installation. Are you able to utilize any recovery option recommended by your computer manufacturer? What startup media do you have, including a system repair disc? See my sig and the links below it.
