Hi, I'm not sure where to post this, Windows 8 or Windows 7....

I have 3 machines, 2 x Windows 7(1 Ultimate x64-Self Built, 1 Student x86-HP Laptop) and 1x Windows 8 Pro x86-10 yr old Dell.

I have configured them all into a Homegroup. All wich are WORKGROUP. I cannot access the Network Computer of Windows 8 without the "ENTER YOUR NETWORK PASSWORD" to pop up. I don't have one. I can, however access the Laptop and it's files and cannot copy and paste what I want anymore, it would tell me I need Permission to perform this action.

network.PNG network pass.PNG

Now, if I was to access the HOMEGROUP computers from my Windows 7 PC, The Laptop files I can access, but can't copy or past anything. I belive I need to set up some permissions and the correct folders, as I just formatted this PC a few weeks ago and might have forgotten to set that up properly, However, when I try to click on any of the Shared Files/Folders for the Windows 8 PC, from my Win7 PC, Nothing happens..the file/folder won't open.

I can access and copy and paste from the Laptop to the Win7 and Win8 Machines.

I cannot go from the Win7 to the Win8 what so ever.

Basically, I think I have a few things going on here and I was trying to give you as much info as I can. Aside from Formatting, I am lost for the resolution to my problem.

I have also left the Homegroups restarted and rejoind the Homegroup, restarted and still won't work.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the Help in advance!!!

Are you certain that the time/date settings on all those machines are set correctly and in sync with each other?

You will definitely need to set up permissions on the Windows 8 machine, but if it's in the Homegroup then you should have read permissions on the Homegroup folders by default.

I believe that it's also required that you set up a password on the Windows 8 machine, you can easily turn off the requirement to type in the password by following the link.

Yes. All the Times and Date's are the same..I currently just left the Homegroup on all three machines and started a new one. Now nothing works....lol...I did notice, that in the Network information on the Win8 machine, it says "Private Network" Win8.PNG

My Win7 says, "Network 2"
Win7.PNG

Laptop says, "Network"
Laptop.PNG

Not sure if any of these mean anything or not...I'm almost at the point, that I've changed the settings so much, that I might have messed them up too much and I should just re-format again...but I want to figure this out first...

If you can set up a Homegroup between all these machines then you should have no problems with sharing between them all, unless of course there is a third party anti virus or firewall involved here.

Can we assume there is only one router in this network?

Yes, only 1 Router in this Network. I was able to fix one network from Network 2 to Network, but I still have a Private one. I"m not sure if this is an issue or not...I also unplugged my Modem and restarted all my PC's.... I can't access from My Win7 to Win8 Homegroup..But everyone else I can, From Win8 to Win7 Laptop won't go, Win7 Laptop to Win8 works, Win7 My Comp Now Works!, Win8 to Win 7 My comp Works.....

So, now, only on the Win7 Laptop, can't get into My Win7 PC, but I can go from Win7 my PC to the Win7 Laptop

UPDATE: I Got it all working now!!!! I went into my folder of my Documents on my Windows 7 PC and Chose, "SHARE WITH" and I said the HOMEGROUP and then I changed it from READ to READ/WRITE.....So Thanks for all your help! at least I didn't have to reformat!!

For Windows 8 private network is the one you want, in Windows 7 it was Work or Home.

Yes as you found out, be default the Homegroup only shares read permissions but you can just change that to Homegroup read/write as you found out.

Glad you have it all working now. :)

You can mark as solved if you want too.
