Internet Connection sharing problem with Windows 8

My friend lives in an area where the only possible internet connection is through a CDMA USB device. They have multiple computers all connected through a host computer sharing this CDMA connection.

Recently they had a major problem with the Windows XP machine that was acting as host. So they bought a new desktop computer (HP PRE with Intel Core i7). I got them a copy of Windows 8 Pro and installed it on the host. Everything was going great until it was time to share the internet connection! I clicked on the CDMA device and clicked to share the connection using the ethernet connector as the shared device. The Ethernet cable goes to wireless router plugged into 1 of 4 switch connectors. All WAN features are turned off on router. I set the router's local IP to an address in same subnet as shared connection on host machine (192.168.137.1).

Then I connected a 2nd computer to the wireless router. This computer connects great! It gets an valid IP address from host. I can connect from 2nd computer to host to browse files on host, no problem. However, the 2nd computer can not connect to the internet.

When it first connects, the 2nd computer shows internet access, but after 30 seconds or so, internet access is disabled.

Can't seem to find any answers anywhere! Any ideas? Already thought of dropping back to Windows 7!

Thanks for any help you may have.

I have set up a home group network with three computers, one, HP 20 All in One desk top, recently purchased with Windows 8 factory installed. The second an HP desktop 6207 with Windows 7 and an HP 3700 Slimline with Windows Vista. It wasn't easy.

My Cable Company gave me a free Netgear N600 wireless router and set it up for me. But they wouldn't touch the other two computers or network, that was out of scope and responsibility. So I went to Barnes & Noble and Noble and bought two books #1 Windows 8 Step by Step #2 Set up a Network Step by Step Windows 7.

Suffice it to say that Windows 8 makes it easy it set up a network but none the less it is certainly loaded with a myriad of options and alternatives. There are numerous ways to set up the network and numerous "protections and passwords". Since the network is in my home secure, and there are no other users, I kept it, as they say, simple/stupid.

First I learned that trying to set up a network with three different versions of Windows isn't in the cards. So I upgraded #2 from W7 to W8. Whereas I couldn't print in 7 I could in 8. The older, Slimline isn't eligible. It has all system requirements except RAM. W8 takes 2 GB of RAM. It only has 839 MB. So I can't upgrade to W8. But I can get it on the network and it will open IE and Internet access.

The whole network setup is found in the control panel under network and sharing. But that isn't the place to set it up. It is set up under "charms" *( mouse arrow extreme right to open and down in "settings" click to open, then in pc settings, click to open. Follow the procedures.

I found that the many options for security and protection, ID's and passwords, are so extensive and numerous that they will absolutely drive you "nuts". I keep a notebook and diligently record all of them. A normal person will never remember all.

Sorry but it's just too extensive and diverse to post here but, speaking for myself, I would not have been able to accomplish it without the books Even so it takes due diligence to understand them which I read and reread several times. There are details and many photos/screen shots. Those you cannot get on a forum.

Tips:

* Trying to set up a network with various versions of Windows is asking for trouble. It will work, not too satisfactorily, with Windows 7 and 8. It will NOT work with older versions, Vista and XP.

* Older versions are 32 bit. Newer 64 bit. There's another problem co-mingling the two. Windows 8 comes with both a 32 bit and a 64 bit disc, 2 in the box.

* All computers need to be checked for adequate system requirements. That is available on each one by opening "computer" then "properties".

* If your goal is simply to get each computer Internet access it is very feasible and do-able with different versions. If your goal is to have each computer capable of accessing the data, files, folders of the others, with W7, or Vista, or XP, it isn't going to work for you

Years ago I set up a wired network. It was so complicated and troublesome that I took it down. Now with the advances in technology the current wireless networks are vastly improved.

There is no reason to go back to Windows 7 if the computers have adequate system requirements and all are on Windows 8 64 bit. I think that a retrograde move will be in the wrong direction and from the frying pan into the fire.

ICS is not working very well at all in Windows 8, there are countless complaints about it not working, I believe that Msoft crippled it because of security problems and in reality everyone should be using a router.

But if you want ICS to work try the following steps.

Set ics service start mode to auto(delayed)

run->services.msc->internet connection sharing->startup type-auto(delayed)

restart pc or stop/start service.

In general with Windows 8 and ICS, you need to stop and restart the service when it's not working.

It may help to configure the 2nd machine using a static IP in the same range as the 1st and use the IP's of the 1st as default gateway address and same DNS on the 2nd machine.

I have tried in vain to set up ICS on my Windows laptop. I have an Ethernet connection and I want to use my laptop as a wireless router for my iPad and my phone (there is no phone service where I am).
The steps I have taken so far:

In NETWORK/PROPERTIES/SHARING I checked the box to SHARE THIS INTERNET CONNECTION

Then, I opened up the Command Prompt as ADMINISTRATOR and typed
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid="mynetwork" key="12345678"
wlan start hostednetwork
wlan show hostednetwork

There it shows that the number of clients is 1 and it is Authenticated

All the other devices see the new WAP I have created in my laptop.
BUT when I try to connect my phone (Android) or an iPad to the network, I get a INCORRECT PASSWORD.
In my Windows machine, I have set the password as both 12345678 AND "12345678" (I don't know if the quotes are required or not). But no matter what I do, I can't get a connection.

What is going on?

As far as I know you can only set up a hosted wireless network from a "Wireless" connection not a Wired one. Even if you did get it to work it may not be a reliable connection. Generally speaking an Ad-Hoc network is always wireless to wireless.

I would think you need some type of virtual router software to make this work using a wired connection, although the ones I've seen also mention it's for sharing a "Wireless" connection.

I got a few steps closer. I used ipconfig /all to find the (dynamic) ip that my computer was getting through Ethernet. I set the iPad to the same subnet, and the iPad's gateway to be the ip of my Win8 laptop. For the DNS, I first used the DNS server that my laptop was using, then I tried GOOGLE (8.8.8.8).

Now, the iPad finds my computer and lets me log in. BUT - I can't get to the net because I get a "DNS failure" message. Nothing I have tried so far has worked. If I can get through to a DNS server - I think "I'm Golden".

Complete solution.

Source: Internet Connection Sharing ( ICS ) not working in Windows 8 CP

And here is a solution, I posted this earlier.

Set ICS service start mode to auto(delayed)

run->services.msc->internet connection sharing->startup type-auto(delayed)

restart pc or stop/start service.

this service will loaded after windows starting in about 5 minutes (on i7 960), its not immediately start.

Second solution to make ICS work on start up....

Go to run->services.msc but then, aside from checking ICS service, CHECK FOR "Routing and Remote Access" if it's on manual you need to set it to Automatic-delayed and turned on.

Default was turned "OFF" , not even "Manual".

After i changed it for "Automatic" and pressed start, Internet started working.

(I use a translator)

execute: services.msc

automatic configuration of wired, state "manual" change to "automatic"

reboot

Properties network, LAN, properties, there is a new tab "Authentication"

"disable" IEEE 802.1x Authentication

now works like Windows XP

do not forget to share Internet from the network card which connects the modem.

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum.
And I am really helpless...pls pls pls help me with this problem...
Let me create background first..

I am an employee of a MNC....and it has strict rules regarding to internet usage.
We are provided with a laptop and dongle too but the main problem is maximum sites are blocked through websense.
But somehow I have managed to unblock them by using proxy server.

McAfee is installed by the company which is really strong. It blocks everything.

Now my main objective is to use hotspot through dongle (Tata Photon Max).
First of all sharing was disabled and somehow I managed to crack it down by surfing internet.

Here are the settings I did:
Enabled ICS in services.msc
Enabled Routing and Remote Access in services.msc
Set value to 1 in regedit for ShowSharedAccess and Personal Firewall Config.
Also I disabled Prohibit use of Internet Connection Firewall on your DNS.....in gpedit.msc

Also I have set many services in services.msc to Automatic.

I have tried many hotspot softwares also..like mhotspot, Virtual Router Manager but had no success.
Connectify is not running in my laptop, I don't know why.

So I used cmd...
Hotspot is created successfully.
My phone shows the wifi but there is NO INTERNET ACCESS.
I have enabled Internet Sharing in tata photon by selecting Local Area Connection *2 in Network and Sharing Center.

And let me be very clear......It worked before but now it is showing no internet access.

What I can think is that there is some problem with TCP/IP settings....becuase I have many changed to them.

And when I see in my Windows Phone what IP it uses...it is 165.254.95.223
Subnet mask 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway 0.0.0.0
DNS 0.0.0.0
DNS Suffix: None

And in Local Area Connection *2 (that is the hotspot adapter) I have set
Obtain IP address and DNS Server automatically in IPv4 and IPv6 is unchecked everywhere.

I have tried many things till now but had no success.

Here is my ipconfig/all:
