I would like to be able to share files among the computer on my LAN. Unfortunately, the are not all running Windows 8. My question is can my Ununtu 12.10 based laptop be set up to join Homegroup? I'd like to share files on my LAN without needing to build a network server, or anything crazy.

Only Windows 7 or 8 machine can join the Homegroup however, you can easily share files between Ubuntu and Windows 7 or 8 machines. The link below shows you how.
