Check the channel that the router is broadcasting on.

I find that on the higher number channels like 11 and 13, Windows 8 can only achieve limited connectivity, or even cannot connect to the wireless network at all. Windows 7 has problems there too, whereas on the same machine, Linux Mint has no problems at all. Neither has XP, for that matter.

I use inSSIDer to check if my router is actually operating, and if the router is working, but there is no connectivity I reset the router. I also disable the automatic channel changer, and stick to channel 6.

If your router automatically changes channels to avoid congestion, this can be a source of dropout, when you lose the internet connection periodically and for just a short time.

Well, about two years ago, I actually found out about DD-WRT. I went to see if my router was supported, and it apparently isn't. I just checked the compatibility list again, and it is still disappointingly small (only around 30). I'm not sure if I should risk flashing the firmware on an apparently unsupported router.

My router is a Netgear DG834PN that I bought back in 2008.
