I been having the same problem in Windows 8. As what I have found is that in 8 you can't change Windows 8 to home. You can only change it to public or to private networks. Private is Home and Work network settings put together. An on Windows 7 I can see the Windows 8 computer but on 8 I can't see the 7 one the same issue your having. I been looking for a fix for hours and still haven't found one.

The only problem I have with my 8 pro, there is a big delay when trying to connect to desktop pc with 7 Ultimate. Any where from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, once that happens I can go through anything that's shared on the desktop with no problems...just a big delay.

What I didn't realize was that I hadn't joined a network aka home group. Once I joined, I can connect to any pc on the network with no problems at all now. No more delays.

You're NAS has an ip address what you need to do is input that ip address as an exception. Don't ask me how to do it as I don't know all the firewall types out there...

If you click the Network Icon in the taskbar you'll get a ribbon listing your Network connections. Right click the one you want to change and then click the "Turn file sharing on or off" button that pops up. Turning file sharing ON should switch it from Public to Private. Private is the new Home.
