Hi All,

I recently did an upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit to Windows 8 Pro 32 Bit

Im been experiencing an issue with my wifi connectivity only on my Windows 8 Laptop (Limited Connectivity)

Apart from that the Wifi works perfectly with my Windows 7, and other mobile platforms ect

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and the problem still presists

I've got a Acer Travelmate 5742G

This is my Wifi Troubleshooting Report:

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator. Otherwise: 1. Unplug or turn off the device. 2. Once all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds. 3. Turn the device on or plug it back in to the power outlet. To restart a router or modem that has a built-in battery, press and quickly release the Reset button.
Reset the "WiFi" adapterCompleted
This can sometimes resolve an intermittent problem.

With upgrades sometimes winsock or the TCP/IP stack gets corrupted. To reset them both type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time hitting enter after each one then reboot the system.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Have you installed any third party A/V software?

If this doesn't fix the problem please post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from this machine and I will have a look at it. :)

Are you sure you're using the correct password for your wifi? It won't tell you if you have the wrong password in most cases, it just won't work.

Hi Chev65

I've found another issue,

I have two wifi Access points setup in my house

For some reason my Windows 8 laptop connects to only the Asus Wifi Access Point but when it connects to the Netgear Access Point is says limited connection

I've tested both access points with my Windows 7 Laptop and both are working 100%

I've attached a screenshot of my ipconfig/all

Thanks

You will need to disable DHCP on one of those access points or it will cause problems. You may even need to change the default gateway on one of the routers to fit into the subnet of the other router. This is the reason I always suggest that people use a dedicated access point rather than using another router to set up an access point. A simple switch automatically disables DHCP and places the A/P into the subnet of the gateway router.

It can be done with a regular router but the set up procedure ALWAYS confuses the user.

The ipconfig must be from the Asus access point?

You can see that the DNS is coming from two different default gateways and you only want one.

Which ever router is the first one "the Gateway" should be used as the DHCP server. Disable DHCP on the other router.

You should also disable the Microsoft hosted wireless network adaptor in Device Manager.

There is no reason to unsolve this thread as the original problem is now fixed and the new problem has a completely different cause. :)

Hi Chev65,

Thanks for your reply,

I disabled the DHCP on one of the access points and disabled the Microsoft hosted wireless network adaptor.

I also flushed the DNS and restarted but when running ipconfig/all command it still picks up both DNS Servers as displayed in the attachment in my previous post

I still cannot connect to the Netgear Router

192.168.0.1 = Netgear Access Point
192.168.1.1 = Asus Access Point

What should I do next?

Ok assuming that you disabled DHCP on the Netgear router. You should change the default gateway Ip of the Netgear router to 192.168.1.2 which should put that router inside the subnet of the Asus router.

Be sure and check the wireless security and encryption, you should be using WPA2 with AES encryption for Windows 8 drivers.

Updating the firmware on the Netgear router might also help. :geek:

Wifi: limited connectivity; sleep mode

Hi chev65

I have an Accer Iconia W510 hybrid Pc/Tablet with Windows 8. Every time I turned on from sleep mode the wifi it's with "limited connectivity".

To solve it, I disconnect an reconnect to my wifi signal and works correctly until the Pc goes to sleep mode and the problem appears again.

Can you help me to correct this problem, please?. I've tried the solution you gave to Gavilan 101 but didn't work. I'm attaching the screenshot of my ipconfig/all.

Thanks

From the screen shot you have a valid IP with no problems showing.

It also looks like you are using the new wireless standard 802.11ac, does your router have support for this? Have you tried updating the firmware on the router?

Do you have a third party anti virus software installed?

This is where i though the problem may be, however asus did say that it was backwards compatable as my wifi dongle runs of the b/g standard. It is a broadcom card, they will have the firmware?

Cheers

Do you have the Asus AC66U router?

I'm a bit confused when you say the b g standard where it's showing as 802.11ac.

Chev65,

Advance apologies for the necropost....

I have been experiencing the same problem. Other wireless devices can come and go from the house and they reconnect to the router, but my Win 7 Pro 32-bit laptop is finicky. It is great to find this (possible) solution. I look forward to trying it.

Just to add to the knowledge base:
Also, I usually "hibernate" my laptop (restarting maybe once every 2-3 weeks). What I've noticed is that if I bring it out of hibernation and login immediately, it won't reconnect. However, if I let it sit for a bit waiting for me to login, when I do login I seem to connect. I recently replaced my router and that did not seem to fix it. This only happens at home, too. Not at work.

I did a clean Win7Pro 32-bit install when I bought this laptop from a bog box store - your comment

really caught my eye...

So.....
A couple quick questions before I try your recommended solution: Are their any risks with this process? Will I lose any other connections or affect any other network settings? Also, is this a one time fix, or do I do this whenever it happens?

Regardless, if this works, it will be much easier than cycling power on the router (and likely better for the router?)... thanks again for the help.

-Jim

With upgrades sometimes winsock or the TCP/IP stack gets corrupted. To reset them both type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time hitting enter after each one then reboot the system.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

Have you installed any third party A/V software?

If this doesn't fix the problem please post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from this machine and I will have a look at it. :)

It's one time fix, safe, no side affects, no risks.

Nothing else will be affected. It's a good thing to try, no matter what. It sets the bindings on the tcp/ip network stack back to standard and removes any 3rd party stuff that may have latched on.

Routers don't care how many times you reboot them. They're just like any other computer. Most run a stripped down version of Linux.

Make sure you have latest driver installed. If you have a 3rd party firewall, uninstall it. Update router to latest firmware. Set beacon interval in its settings to 50 ms. Use Vistumbler free software to see which channel is most open and set your router's radio broadcast to that.
