wifi status

For those of us that have laptops or using a wifi dongle and want to check the status of our wifi connection - the speed of the connection. Here's how.

1. right click wireless connection in notification area.

2. click open network and sharing center.

3. click on your wifi connection.

This should show your wifi connection speed...mine is at 144Mbps

I use that connection speed read out to tune my wireless, by using channel bonding "20-40Mhz" and looking around for a few clear channels and by using Xirrus I can tune my wireless network for best possible speed. Really this is a measure of bandwidth and potential speed is what shows up. HD movies can be streamed with zero skips or glitches.

With 5 bars connection strength and with channel bonding using the bandwidth of three different channels 300Mbps is possible. You also need to use the "802.11n Only" setting, not mixed, plus WPA2 with AES encryption which are both made to work at N speeds.

Sometime in 2013 the new standard for wireless is coming out, I plan on purchasing an A/P for the new 802.11ac which will be capable of 1GB speeds just like Ethernet can do now.

From what I know about this some routers can't do more than 150Mbps but the good ones can do the full 300Mbps, there are also limitations on certain wireless adaptors so reading reviews is a valuable tool for getting the right hardware for this.

Other than that just use the settings I described earlier and it usually takes a bit of hunting around "trial and error" with Xirrus WiFi Inspector for a few clear channels. What seems to work best is using channel bonding then making sure the bonded channels span part of the channel spectrum that isn't being used by any of the neighbors.

Thanks dude....I have been playing around with it and got it working. It fluctuates from 270 to 300 mbps. Wow what a difference with everything...downloads, uploads and general computing. Nice very nice.

Nice work on that, I knew you would figure it out.

It's interesting how channel bonding works to use the total bandwidth from 2 channels in order to gain more potential speed. It looks like you even have the full 13-14 channels because you are out of the states. We are stuck with using 11 channels only in the 2.4Ghz band. You can see insider where you are now using the bandwidth from channel 5 all the way to channel 13.

It's quite a trick for me to find the unused channels in my particular area, Insider or Xirrus really helps for this.

It took me awhile to figure out how to do this because there are no specific instructions on how to achieve 300Mbps on the internet, I pretty much discovered how to do this on my own.

Hopefully others will find this thread to be useful. Maybe you should change the title to, How to achieve the full 300Mbps wireless.

When the new standard 802.11ac comes out I will be purchasing an access point and then I'll see if the promised 1GB wireless speed is really possible or not.

I'm pretty sure they are achieving this by using channel bonding in the 5Ghz range which has many more channels to gain bandwidth from. I will also have most of those channels to myself because hardly anyone around here is using the 5Ghz band.
