Already been there and done that a couple of days ago and had exactly the same result without Avast being installed (and used Avastclear to make sure it was gone.)

Just to satisfy my curiosity I uninstalled avast through add remove programs rebooted then ran avast clear to get rid of the remnants rebooted again. Windows Defender enabled itself. Ran the update again from the installer I had previously downloaded rather then through Windows Update.
