Thank you for all help, it got me going in the correct direction. In my case it was a stick of bad ram that was the final culprit, at least as far as BSOD. Still will not install the update to 8.1, but at least it is failing with out crashing the system. I call that progress.

Over the last several days I have been attempting to update windows to 8.1. It starts, tells me that it is installing. At this point I have been unable to stay through the length of the install to see the point that the crash actually happens. Sorry for the lack of info, but trying to deal with...
