64-bit. I ended up playing it safe and bought a Pentium 4 650 on ebay dirt cheap. The CPU is missing one of the bypass capacitors, but it still works. I'm currently installing a 64-bit OS. Success!

I have the PTGD1-LA motherboard as well, and it came with a Pentium 4 540J. Like the OP I was also looking to upgrade, so I went ahead and bought a Pentium 4 661 on ebay, which is built with 65nm transistors. That was a bad move. I can confirm that this motherboard does NOT support the P4 661...
