Thought I'd reply to my own thread - with a happy ending, oddly enough.
Having had no time to do anything about this No-Fi situation for the past two weeks, I was just steeling myself to go through with a Repair install as suggested, when I saw the Defender notification for virus updates etc...
Aye, the adapter's enabled. I think I may be heading for a refresh, if that's the right term.
Unless maybe it's worth uninstalling the adapter again, reinstalling that new version, and rebooting? I'll kind of try anything right now.
You're very patient, Popeye. And I'm very grateful for yr time.
Aye thanks Popeye, I did just now. The patient just isn't responding, I'm afraid.
The McAfee product was indeed a free 30-day trial version. As I said, I'd be happy to go back to the condition my notebook was in pre-McAfee removal but I don't know if a factory reset (or whatever) would cause...
Yup, something ain't right here. And yup, I did run the troubleshooter, more than once.
Of course, right up to the point when I uninstalled McAfee and ran their removal tool, everything worked perfectly on the notebook. I'd happily go back to scratch on this - ideally to the condition the...
Aargh, when I get to Set up a new connection or network, there is no manually connect to a wireless network option. Only these:
Connect to the Internet
Set up a new network
Connect to a workplace - none of which do anything constructive for me.
As you'll already have guessed, I'm not very clever...
Hi, just checked: Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter version 10.0.0.285.
I just downloaded the files just now - and installed via the Device Manager like you said, Popeye. Also rebooted. The Driver tab is now updated to version 10.0.0.298 and sez it's working properly.
Still...
Ha! That's a perfectly valid question, Popeye. What I'm seeing now is like this:
in PC settings>Network>Connections>WiFi Not Connected: just says "properties"
same path to Ethernet Not Connected: gives device details (Realtek PCIe etc)
when I plug in an ethernet cable, I get instant network...
OK, that was a real step forward - I'm typing this on me notebook via wired connection.
I uninstalled everything and two came back:
1. Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter
2. Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Only thing is, the WiFi isn't working. I checked the Qualcomm and the...
Thanks again Popeye. Sounds like a plan - when I click to uninstall, it asks if I want to delete the drivers too? Should I do that for all, reboot and see what comes back?
Cheers, M
Thanks Popeye - good to be here.
In Device Manager>network adapters all eleven of 'em say "the device is working properly".
Although I'm not seeing anything that exactly matches what you're asking, I do see a Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter and a Realtek PCIe GBE Family...
Hi all,
I bought my Acer notebook last month - bundled with Windows 8.1 and a 30 day McAfee trial. All's been working perfectly until I uninstalled McAfee (followed by running their removal tool, rebooting etc. - everything's been done by the book) last night.
Now there ain't no internet on...
