Thanks for your help. I think my friend is going to see if its still under warranty. My fear was that it was an internal problem... But unfortunately, I think he might switch over to Mac... O_O

No, the speakers don't cut out when the headphones are plugged in, nor does sound come through when they are only partially plugged in. The jack is a mic/headphone jack, so I can't try the second test. It had Windows 8 when it was purchased.

Thanks for the response. Perhaps I wasn't clear in my first post, but I have already done those steps. The device isn't even listed as disabled or disconnected.
