Not what I was hoping for, but thanks @Brink. I just can't understand why this kind of thing can't be fixed without wiping the hard drive with a clean install. I do not expect it to be easy, but not everyone is afraid of hard (as I have demonstrated by pursuing this for 3+ months ;) ).
