I think it's quite steep considering they should have come with the unit to begin with. This is the best way to alienate your customer and force them to another computer manufacturer which is exactly what happened with me in this experience.
The factory recovery partition is about 600mb with only 235mb worth of files that are used to reset the factory condition of the computer. I assume it uses boot and install.wim to make this happen. My issue is that I only have Windows 8.1 developer boot and install.wim and not Windows 8 64bit...
The install DVD is for Windows 8.1 developer and asks for a product key. Asus recovery partition files have an embedded product key code that Microsoft says they can provide for me, but Asus insists that it is something that Microsoft provides. Mom and dad don't agree on this one  I am...
Recovery screenies
I did not see boot.wim and install.wim. I will look to see if I can find them on the Windows 8.1 install
found boot.wim and install.wim on the Windows 8.1 install DVD and they are huge files. Is this what needs to be in the sources folder to boot the factory recovery...
It goes through the paces and goes to reboot. It appears that when I installed 8.1 that my recovery partition got wiped-at least it shows 100% unused. I will go back in on the Linux side and add the factory partition files and try the rest again. I will also see if the factory files will fit...
Actually those are the files I backed up on a usb. I did try installing from usb but it barked that it was a unusable device or something to that effect. I looked around to see if I could make an iso from the recovery partition files (factory) but didn't find anything. Did try Winusb in Ubuntu...
I did not have a blank disc at the time, so I was unable to make a recovery disk. All I have is the recovery partition and a developer's version of 8.1. That being said I actually have the Windows 8 recovery partition (from the factory) and I have the Windows 8.1 developer preview recovery...
I am trying to restore my Asus a55a laptop to factory setting from the cmd.exe Adminstrator shell. What commands might one use to select the recovery partition files and do a 'reset' from these files? I have little trouble finding tutorials in Linux but am not sure how to find such tutorials for...
I signed up for developer trial of Windows 8.1. I am going to try installing 8.1, then using it to make the usb recovery with the Window 8 utility. I won't actually do this until tomorrow-so I am still open to other suggestions.
