I had this problem I was planning to buy a SSD anyway so installed Win 8.1 core fresh copy used a generic key then used the OEM serial so far so good, Got the original HD still in working order...then created a image after updating and installing programs.

OK thanks for checking the log, I see a realtek audio in installed programs, not sure if i need that? I have never connected a printer to the laptop, I hid some updates yes but there not there now. I'm currently installing KB2975719.

Ok iv'e made a few developments so to speak, I got to about 30 updates done it required a restart then proceeded to fail and it did restore on its own this time, I was able to download windows 8.1 it installed itself overnight....I decided to contact Asus anyway he gave me instructions... 1...

Ok so i have done a clean boot removed McAfee, disabled Win firewall, started a few updates and now three have failed. Just downloaded and installed them updates manually they have worked. so far so good :think:

OK after i ran that FIX i did the updates and you guessed it they Failed! Iv'e had it since the 4th of august from Currys, It's not a hardware issue so i don't think i can return it unless it's hardware, I could format it but unsure weather that will void the warantee.

Thought i'd reply to this as iv'e done a refresh before installing updates i had to run this Fix Windows Update Error messages and other Windows Update issues Looks like i'll haft to do this everytime i need a refresh.

I can only suggest going into Change pc settings > general and giving it a refresh without affecting files.

Do you have Always show icons, never thumnails ticked. Untick it and apply.

Have you tried sfc /scannow in command prompt as administrator.

Rebuild the Icon Cache may help, Open File Explorer > Folder Options > Views to show Hidden System Files. Next, go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local folder and delete the hidden IconCache.db file. Reboot. This action will purge and rebuild the icon cache.

List of failed updates, the list goes on and on. Well that it strange, They have now all successfully installed.
