The 'broke computer' is 64 bit as well as the working computer. The working computer acknowledges that the cable is hooked to it, but no files or file/drive letter appears under 'computer'. The broke computer is Windows 8 and the working computer is a Windows 7, both desktops.

Caperjack, I guess I may have messed up.... I went to another desktop, and attempted to download ubuntu 12.04 after watching a youtube video "on how easy it would be" to get to my files. Now I would like to abandon that idea as far as ubuntu, but I can't get it to stop downloading and worse...

Facts: 1. Computer evidently malfunctioned during a windows update 2. Turn on computer, goes to HP blue screen and "thinking wheel", then black screen (never gets to login screen) 3. Have troubleshooted with HP on the phone 4. Ordered Restore cd. 5. Trying to recover files on hard drive...
