I've replaced my NIC with one that was rated to be compatible with Windows 8, and disabled and uninstalled by Bigfoot one. The problem has entirely ceased.
My power supply is 850W, less than a year old. KINGWIN and 80+ rated, which I believe is more than enough to power my rig. You are correct with the Windows 8 upgrade assessment.
