Still confused. The new PC will have no OS on it from the start. I thought I could install Windows XP onto it, then upgrade to 8. When you say "reinstall old windows install," I don't understand. I'm not reinstalling anything.

So, I can "upgrade" to Windows 8 without having a previous install? I didn't know that was possible.

The new PC will have clean drives though, why would I need to clean them? I'm only using the XP install so the Win 8 upgrade will recognize a previous Windows installation.

But if I clean the HDD I won't be able to upgrade because Windows won't recognize a previous installation right? I'm trying to put together steps. 1. Install XP - On HDD or SSD? 2. Run Upgrade Assistant 3. Boot from USB with Win 8 Upgrade 4. Erase previous XP installation 5. Install Win 8

I believe it will have a uEFI BIOS, I bought a Asus P8Z77-V motherboard.
