I have WIndows 7 64 bit and I just wondering on something. If I ""upgrade" from Widnows 7 to Windows 8 Release preview, can I upgrade from the release preview to the full version of Windows 8 when it's released? Im getting my Windows 8 from windowsupgradeoffer.com. So can I upgrade from release preview to the complete Windows 8 when it ahs been released in the end of October?

As far as I know, yes. My Dev PC has Release Preview "Upgrade" from XP, and all i know, is you need a product key prior to the new windows install.

Hi. Welcome to EF.

No. That will not be possible. All releases that expire on a certain date will not upgradable. One must have XP, Vista, or 7 loaded on their machine.

Ok. Glad you corrected me. :) Thanks for the update. I installed Enterprise Evaluation via MSDN which stated that it was not upgradeable. That still may hold for that but not for other editions.

No problem, that's why I am keeping my Win 8 RP and tried Enterprise Evaluation on a separate partition.

This is good news. Not perfect but what is now a days. At least I can easily go from RP to RMT without having to change any file settings. Makes my life easy for sure.

Read it again. Applications and settings will not be carried over. You'll be able to use the upgrade license, but no upgrade-in-place will be permitted.

I'm dual booting 8EE with 7. I think I have room to sneak RP on as well now that I found this info out. Thanks again.

Not an issue... I can easily re-install the applications and reset the settings. I have all the instillation files saved on a separate partition so it's going to be easy to do in my case. I keep all of the files I create on that partition as well.. so this is a non issue for me. But, thanks for pointing that out.

Wow... that's a serious loop-hole. If you don't have a single Windows operating system to your name and obtain the Release Preview, you can then upgrade it to full W8 Pro for just $40. Not bad. Who cares if your settings aren't retained? In the past with earlier versions of Windows, Microsoft recommended a fresh install anyway, to be sure nothing was left behind from the beta software.

You're supposed to have had an OS that quaifies for the use of an upgrade license in place before the RP.

However, I don't know whether that is a technical requirement as well as a legal one.

For example: in using the retail Windows 7 upgrade, the upgrade was supposed to be launched from within an activated qualifying OS (XP or Vista). However, there was no problem installing it from within the Windows 7 RC version. I did that. (I wasn't concerned about legality. I owned the qualifying OS copies, and was pleased that I didn't have to re-install them to install the RTM versions.)

Not a loop-hole at all. You can ONLY upgrade from the RP to the full version with the upgrade offer IF you used RP to upgrade from a previous Windows version. If you installed RP as a full install and not an upgrade then no you cannot upgrade to RTM.

I have the Enterprise RTM 90-day trial (64-bit), and when it dies, that's it. Goodnight, Irene.

But I have kept a system image of the Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit setup, so can simply
restore that, then perform the upgrade.

Although doing a full clean install is no biggie, should it come to that, as in order to install
the RTM I needed to do so from scratch. So I know everything works.....

EDIT: - Like Bunny, and many others, my C: drive contains nothing but the OS and installed
programs. All my files etc are on other partitions or drives.
