Disk Format and other questions regarding installing W8 RP

I downloaded the W8 RP iso file from here.
I was reading that you can format the HDD at the beginning of the installation process. So no need to format with a thrid party software?
Also is it true that you can create multiple partitions with the installer?
I'd like to do a 20Gb partition for the OS and programs and the rest of the HDD for everything else.
Also it reads that my graphic card must have "DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver" What does that mean and how can I check it? And will it realy not work if I don't have it specificaly?

If your using Win 7 I would make the 20GB partition with it, move the files you want to there and then do the instillation.
By choosing the option to do a custom instillation you can select the partition to install Win 8 on. Just pick the one that you want to install it on and you should be all set.

What is "DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher - Microsoft Answers
Your graphic card should be OK if your using Win 7/Vista or XP.

Yes, the Advanced drive options will let you delete, create, and format partitions during the install process.

Thanks for your anwsers Bunny and Alpha. I'm not sure about the WDDM driver because the graphic card is quiet old. I think I'll find out when I'll try.

CDBOOT: Cannot boot from CD - ERROR CODE: 5 Any way to go round that? Is it my MoBo not supporting boot on DVD?

you can unzip the ISO and run the setup.exe. That way you don't have to use the CD player.. or do you have a DVD??
EDIT: I used 7Zip to unzip the ISO image. Works just fine. HTH

Thanks Bunny for you reply. Yes, of course, I have a DVD player. But the computer doesn't want to boot on a DVD. It does boot on a CD-R thought. I burnt the iso file with Nero. I tried both DVD-R and DVD+R. I can read the files off the DVD, so I think it was burnt properly, yet not boot with it.
I tried to run setup.exe but it tells me that it expects a new version of Windows. Indeed the computer I'm trying to install W8 on has only W98SE installed. But why a setup supposed to INSTALL AN OS and supposed to run IN ABSENCE OF ANY OS needs another OS?
I have another computer with XP installed next to me but it's not able to connect to the internet. + I prefer not to test on this computer for other reasons.

You mean the RP is an upgrade only, not the actual OS? That you can't use it on a blank HDD? So why the formating options then? I don't understand.

RP has the OS. If your trying to upgrade a PC that had/has Win98SE on it one issue is that the HDD has a file system that is not NTFS. That could be why you get this:

I tried to run setup.exe but it tells me that it expects a new version of Windows. Indeed the computer I'm trying to install W8 on has only W98SE installed. But why a setup supposed to INSTALL AN OS and supposed to run IN ABSENCE OF ANY OS needs another OS?

Since Win8 is expecting a HDD with an NTFS file system and the old Win98SE was FAT file system and that could cause that message. This might help: Let me google that for you

It could also be an issue with the BIOS on that PC. Oh and here is some information on the DVD issue:
Let me google that for you

EDIT:
Capture.png

The File System On my HDD is NTFS I would bet the one on the one you're trying to upgrade is FAT32.

I got that "Cannot boot from CD - ERROR CODE: 5 message" on one of my older motherboards. What it means is the BIOS on that motherboard can't handle the Boot Loader on the DVD you're trying to boot from. I ended up launching the install from Windows XP that was already on that PC. If you run the setup.exe in the sources folder you'll get all the options you want instead of getting locked into an upgrade.

Thanks Bunny and Alpha.
I expected that by opening setup.exe it woud ask me to reformat the HDD where W98 is installed, to NTSF. Which I would have canceled because I don't want to erase this disc. But the installer just expects another version of Windows (please upgrade Windows --> LOL :D ). As Bunny said, it's probably because it expects in fact a NTSF partition. Ok.
About the DVD Boot issue:
On Google I found several suggestions. Among others: Reburn the DVD into "ISO9660 + UDF" format, or reboot from the goo' ol' 1.44 floppy and launch setup from there. I'll try tomorrow.
By all evidences, my MoBo or its BIOS doesn't recognize/support the W8 DVD boot sector. This problem appeared with W7 DVD boot and they changed the DVD format by this time.
My goal is to install W8 RP to a blank HDD, I bought the other day. I disconnected the other HDD still in the tower, to avoid any accidental erase (you never know which drive letter the material HDD is). (I only reconnected it to test if the install would work off W98).

If you run the setup.exe in the sources folder you will get different options than if you run the setup.exe in the root directory.

>By all evidences, my MoBo or its BIOS doesn't recognize/support the W8 DVD boot sector. This problem appeared with W7 DVD boot and they changed the DVD format by this time. <

That is the same conclusion I came too when I tried to install Windows 7 on one of my older PC's. It already had XP on it so I just launched the install from there. I saw the same suggestions on reburning the DVD but didn't bother. I don't think booting from a floppy will get the job done. The windows 8 install won't run from DOS.

Hi, I burnt a few DVD with different option and slower speed, it didn't help. It's my MoBo doesn't boot on a DVD because it's a DVD.
Then I temporarily installed XP, just to be able to launch the setup (the computer had only W98 and the setup expected another version of windows). XP runs fine on this computer (but how I hate it out-of-the-box!) but W8 not.
Starting the setup on the DVD root:
W8 setup said:
You PCU isn't compatible with W8
Nah...! That's impossible. My PCU is a P4 1.8 Ghz, how it can be uncompatible. So I tried the setup from the "resource" folder. At 63% of Copying Windows Files it wrote:
W8 setup said:
Windows cannot install required files. The files may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation
Ok. Tried with another DVD I burnt before. Same effect. Then I re-downloaded the iso file but this time I didn't waste one more DVD (enough with that!), I extracted the files with 7-Zip. Then the copying of windows files went successfuly. Unfortunately it wouldn't reboot:
W8 setup said:
PC needs to restart. Please hold down the power button. ERROR code: 0x0000005D
So yes W8 is realy not compatible with P4! How could that be?! The P4 was a monument, the most popular processor in history!
Unfortunately W8 is useless to me now because it refuses to install on my computer.
