Hello,

I am trying to upgrade my Win 7 x64 Pro to Win 8 x64 Pro RTM unfortunately it fails at the very last step. Just before getting access to the desktop, when it presents the choice of desktop color.
The reason of the failure is displayed for a few seconds before it starts rolling back the installation.
It says PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

Debugging the minidump showed that it probably failed on ntoskernel.

I am using a Sony Vaio laptop with 4Gb RAM.

Any idea what I could do to solve the problem?
I really don't want to install from scratch.

Thank you

Well, the bios does not have access to this setting.
So I could check with tools like Sandra but won't be able to change if needed.

OK. It is just because there are some computers (in particularly laptops) that refuse to install in AHCI mode.
I had one computer myself that I had to switch to IDE to get the installer to complete.

You're welcome.

Educated guess that your problem is one of the following:

SFEP SFEP.sys Fri Nov 27 00:39:13 2009 (4B0F6601)

Code:

Sony Firmware Extension Parser driver, used to control brightness and other things. Update it to newest.

And for good measure, uninstall this fingerprint reader driver and any related software before the upgrade:

Uninstall this Beyond Magic driver and software:

MtiCtwl MtiCtwl.sys Tue Nov 04 02:40:50 2008 (490FFC82)

Code:
3: kd> lmvm MtiCtwl

Let me know how it goes. One or two other things to mention if needed.

Great job Kernel! I eventually made it to the homescreen and desktop, with my data and apps.
But then another problem popped up, just one at least as I checked the rest.
After a few seconds in Win8 I get a pop up message that stays centered on screen and is persistent.
It says that my battery is either not well connected or not compatible with Win8.
I have contacted Sony that of course dismissed the whole case saying that they do not support Win8 just yet.
The message only gives one option. To hybernate.
So Win8 is unusable for me at the moment, unless somebody has some idea.

Note that I am using a Sony Vaio VPCSA290X laptop.

Thank you
