Help! Did a clean install of RC on a new system...

I just finished putting together my new PC, and I used the windows 8 RC in order to, well, not have to spend so much on windows 7 when I've already payed for 7 once in the past.

I install, and seemingly it all goes well. I get to the home screen. Resolution is wonky because I haven't installed any display drivers yet.

That's the first thing I do, put in my display driver CD (a new Nvidia GTX670 card). I try to install the drivers and I get a "NVIDIA INSTALLATION FAILED". It won't install the drivers. Hell, it actually won't even get past the splash screen for the installer except for when I run it in compatibility mode.

I try to install my motherboard (also a new model) CD that comes with drivers for everything under the sun. I pop it in, click on "install drivers", and I get this error: (see attached picture).

I do some basic googling and I see suggestions such as a bad installation of DirectX. I tried to run DirectX setup from my display driver CD, and it said that DirectX wasn't compatible with this version of windows...

I'm lost... I have no idea what to do. I did a clean wipe/repair/restart whatever it's called, and I cleaned the drive at the same time. All of the above problems still persist. I mean, I'm assuming that windows 8 is the reason these aren't working...because my hardware is all functional as far as I can tell.

If anyone can help at all, you have no idea how incredibly grateful I would be :)

So doing a bit of poking around on this site, I found this tutorial about installing windows 8 via UEFI.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2328-uefi-unified-extensible-firmware-interface-install-windows-8-a.html?filter[2]=Installation%20and%20Setup

I did not split my partition into 3 like they said to here...Also I noticed in another thread about how to uninstall windows 8, that you need to use windows 7 installation media in order to format the partition. Since this was a brand new harddrive and the computer had no previous OS, could either of these be the cause? When I set up the install for the first time, there was no option to format the drive I was to be installing on. "New" was the only thing I could click on. I honestly don't know if any of this is related. I'm grasping at straws here..

Have you tried Windows 8 drivers?

These are for 64 bit, but there are also 32 bit drivers available.

I doubt that the UEFI installation is of any consequence, unless your boot HD is larger than 2GB.

I actually did just an hour ago or so! They worked. I'm amazed. The drivers that came with my motherboard still won't do anything, but I have my graphics card (which, for being a 670, only managed to get a 8.1 in performance rating....my whole system, with SSD, 2133hz ram, etc only got a 7.9 total. Kind of disappointed in that).

I guess I can mark this as solved for now, but before I do, I want to ask a really quick question.

Whenever I boot this computer, it boots/shuts off 4 times before going into windows. I set the drive that windows is installed on as my #1 boot priority, but it always does this 4 times before it'll actually boot. Anyone have any idea why?

Actually.. New problem. Computer froze earlier when trying to run the performance test for the first time. I could move my mouse for a while but everything was, in general, unresponsive. I figured it was a fluke and just restarted. It worked fine the second time.

Now, I'm in the middle of transferring around 200 gbs from my external drive and it freezes again. I can still move the mouse and go to the start menu... But the desktop is totally frozen. I don't want to shut it off if it's still transferring (my external is still flashing) ... I guess I'll let it sit for another hour or two so I can finish hopefully, but is there any reason for these freezes?

The freezing problem seems to be quite common, search for that on the forums here too. lots of threads about it.

I wouldn't go too whole hog on trying to use the RC for day to day use, it is just a beta. Just play with it and get used to how to do things, you'll have to redo everything anyway when it becomes available for purchase if you decide to stick with it...

The freezing thing is getting pretty annoying... If this is common I might actually have to splurge on win7...though that kills me. I mean unless I wanted to run Linux until win8 officially comes out :/

I've been using win8 consumer preview on my old computer for months, and aside from the occasional program not being compatible, I've not had any chronic issues like this freezing...

Some of those threads are suggesting that chrome could be the culprit, which I have had open each time it's frozen. This has never happened to be in the consumer preview though, which is odd.

I've seen double-boot events before, but not 4 times. (Fortunately.)

You haven't filled in your system specs, so we have nothing to compare against. If your motherboard is an Intel one, I suggest that you update the chipset and IME drivers.

A BIOS update may help with the multi-boot. Or not.

You might be better off with Win7, but it's not guaranteed.

If your hardware is new enough, Linux drivers may not be available for it yet. (I'm not a Linux user, but that was the excuse offered by Acronis True Image when the bootable CD rescue version wouldn't support newer motherboards. The rescue CD was Linux based.)

I updated my system specs if that helps at all! (I can also copy paste them here if you'd like).

I did some tinkering in the bios just now that may have something to do with the booting issue. I'm not really sure but unfortunately I have to run out for a bit so I can't test for a little while. It still always boots into windows, it just has to try a few times first... It could very well be due to not having updated drivers, because still no windows 8 support for the drivers that came "with" my motherboard (I'll check intel's site when I get back as well).

Edit: Booting fixed :) It now boots very very switfly. I've been trying to transfer files all day..spent 6 hours waiting for windows "easy" transfer to finish on my old computer. Wish they had told me upfront that it'll only transfer files to the drive that windows is installed on...because mine is too small. Back to the drawing (waiting) bored.
