    Windows 10 Upgrade Nightmare

Several months ago I upgraded my 8.1 system to Windows 10. No problems. Then due to software I needed that was not ready for Windows 10, and some malware, I restored to factory.

Last month I decided to upgrade again. I expected a 3GB download. After 6GB, including a window that indicated progress downloading 2887.7MB, Windows was still downloading at the rate of 200MB/hour.

A window appeared with a "Restart and Install" button. I clicked on it and got a "Download starting" message! Is it starting over? What - is - going - on? I do not have sufficient data quota to support this.

I reset to factory again and disabled updates.
I visited and clicked Upgrade Now.
This time at least I got a progress window telling me that Windows 10 was being downloaded.
However after reaching 82% the laptop entered Sleep mode.
I pushed the power button. After several minutes I got the Windows 8.1 login screen. I logged in.
There is now no indication of what is happening, but the download continues. Usually at 0.5Mbps but for a while it was up to 6.0Mbps.

The download size is now up to 4GB. I can't take much more of this.

I'm thinking my only alternative is to buy a retail copy. At least then I can move it to another machine if needed.

Just a suggestion. Whenever I download a large file I turn off hibernate and set sleep mode to "never". That way no matter how long it takes, it will not be interrupted. After the download is complete, you can turn them back on. Write down the sleep setting before you change them so you know what they are when you change them back.

Another thing is to make sure the power supply is plugged into your laptop.

I believe the Windows 10 download link is good for 24 hours. If it's that slow, I would cancel it and wait 24 hours. Then start the download again. Hopefully it will be faster this time.

0.2Mbps - 0.5Mbps is all the faster Microsoft wants to send.
The network activity has stopped now for nearly an hour, but nothing appears to be happening. CPU activity is sitting on 2%. It looks like it's lost the plot again. There are no buttons or icons to click, no hidden windows.

Try downloading Windows 10 from here. It is Microsoft's website so you know it's safe, Hopefully you will have better luck with it.

I always use the MS windows 10 media creation tool to install or upgrade to Win 10. You can use it to create an install disk or USB thumb drive. Works much better than doing an on-line upgrade.

Thanks for the links. I'll go to the library tomorrow and use their connection.
