Win 8 RP installed. Is the recovery partition any good for Vista ?

I asked a question at this thread.
I have marked it solved.

Now I have a question for my own curiosity......
I've read from one of the Windows articles that after Win 8 is installed over Vista, ( not dual boot, it's clean install), the recovery partition is no good to re-install Vista back to factory settings.
Is that correct ?
If yes, could you provide me with a published autoritative confirmation of the fact ?

Thank you.

The article that I read is found here......
Windows 8 Release Preview: frequently asked questions
scroll to Uninstalling.....
[h=2]Uninstalling[/h][h=4] Can I uninstall Windows 8 Release Preview?[/h] No. To go back to your previous version of Windows, you'll need to reinstall it from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC; typically DVD media. If you don’t have recovery media you might be able to create it from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more information. After you install Windows 8, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

Hi T-4-2. Not sure why you marked your other thread solved. Was it solved? If so, how?

I have an Acer and am familiar with them. Is this concerning an Acer as I see in your system profile? If so, there should be a recovery partition on the C drive. However, I think you might need the recovery disc that they ask you to create on the very first boot to get to it. Does it have an Acer keyboard with the e key on it?

Also, I may have my original recovery disc for I bought my system preloaded with Vista. In fact I think I may have an upgrade disc for Vista. I'll have to lQQk.

I need to clarify.
My question is.......
AFTER win 8 is installed over Vista, will the recovery partition be " no good " for re-installing Vista, like the Windows article said.

I understand your question. Please answer as many of mine as you can. Acer installs there own MBR partition that Windows can't see for it is not NTFS. It should still be there.

Wonder why that article makes it sounding like it applies to all Vista computers.
So, it is " not necessarily so. It depends."
Thanks again.

I think what they are talking about is the primary partition to load Windows onto. If you open diskpart, of which I have not done so in 8, can you see the Acer partition? You shouldn't for it's not NTFS. You'll need a 3rd party disc partitioning program to see it. Whatever you do don't mess with it for I screwed mine up and lost gigs on my HD that I can't use anymore! There is a way, however, to delete it but you'll need higher skilled help than I have.

As far as the Restoring part is concerned on the system, If I am trying to restore the system back to factory settings by using the partition which was created by the manufacturer then it should work fine without any issues. Would test fire it tonight on a machine in the lab and would post the results soon. :D

I had an Acer Aspire with Vista installed - the Vista disk to disk installer was packaged with the Wise package installer, and loads all the Acer software too. The hidden partition was called PQSERVICE PQ is the initials for Partition Quest, an early 3rd party partition tool. It has 2 tricks to hide the partition - 1, it has no drive letter - which makes the disk invisible to the OS, and 2 the disk type is type 27 - an NTFS recovery partition or an Acer PQSERVICE hidden partition, which may be FAT32 or NTFS. As it contained over 8.3 GB of files, I think it was formatted to NTFS.

From Partition types: List of partition identifiers for PCs

27 PQservice
Acer laptop hidden rescue partition. Can be FAT32 or NTFS. Press Alt-F10 during boot to start this. Also other manufacturers use this type for their rescue partition.

27 Windows RE hidden partition
On MBR disks, type 0x27. On GPT disks, GUID: DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC. A hidden version of a Windows RE type 0x7 partition with NTFS. When this is installed, reboot and press F8 in order to boot into this Recovery Environment.

If the partition is still present and invisible - it may be fine to reinstall - it will repartition the disk, I seem to recall - and then it will have a bunch of service packs to download and install

Thanks, fafhed. I was wrong on naming that partition an MBR. That's master boot record. How off the wall was that!

You are correct to call it a PQservice partition. It's been about six years since buying my Acer and dealing with this subject. I don't recall it being a FAT32, but it could have been. I definitely remember it wasn't a NTSF. I remember too that diskpart could not see it. That's why i'm thinking it was neither. But then I'm getting old and contracting CRS.

Anyway, thanks for the info and leads. You are most kind. :)

Let us know how it goes, guys. (I assuming your guys)

Thank you for replying.
The Windows article does not specify the make of the computer. Therefore, I am hoping for answers that apply to all makes. Not just Acer.
Your reply is way over my head with technical stuffs. I am afraid I cannot understand you.
The main question is ... after Win 8 is installed, can one access the recovery partition and use it to re-install Vista.
Or, like the Windows article says, one has to either get a Microsoft DVD or a set of recovery disks from the pc manufacturer in order to reinstall Vista.
Or, go to Digital River and download the Vista iso.

Thank you.

Press Alt-F10 during boot* to start the Vista factory install is all you need to know. Either it will do a factory reinstall, or the system is broken and needs to have boot disks from the manufacturer to return the PC to factory condition
* when the manufacturer's logo appears on the screen.

I think it will allow you to make your own set of Windows recovery DVDs - unless it is damaged

My apology. I don't mean to be too technical. But if you'll bear with me......Believe me, if I can understand this stuff, anyone can, for I'm no rocket scientist. I'm just an ordinary guy.

A partition on a disc is just like a wall in a building. In the living room I put living room furniture in a certain order. (An operating system) then there's another wall (manufacturer's partition) for a bedroom where I place bedroom furniture in a certain order (a manufacturer's recovery information).

That's the info you want to get at. Please be patient and we'll try to help you achieve that.

t-4-2, it is highly unlikely that any Windows install did anything to the PQservice partition. Please follow fafhrd's instructions. Boot up and press Alt/F10 to see if it starts the process. You can always back out by simply shutting down the machine and let us know what it did.

Anything I do in the living room does not effect the bedroom.

t-4-2 without getting technical I've told you what I would do to confirm or otherwise what was in the article. It's not difficult to do an examination of your system to see exactly what is there but it is technical, and involves some fairly powerful utilities.
you can open the disk management console - type diskmgmt.msc on the start screen, and take a screenshot of what appears, and post it here if you like:
