Dual Booting Windows 8 Release Preview and XP on two Hard Drives

Hi

I have a computer with two hard drives in it. I have Windows 8 Release Preview installed on the first Hard Drive and I wanted to install XP on the second Hard Drive to be able to play older games that Windows 8 has issues with.

My first attempt didn't work. I installed Windows 8 on the first Hard Drive then tried to install XP on the second hard drive, it formatted it, copied the basic files then started the windows setup and crashed on the device installation section. I rebooted the computer and it only restarted in XP, came to the same point and crashed again with a blue screen with 'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' message. When I rebooted with and tried to boot into Windows 8 with the system boot menu, it crashed.

I have tried google info, but most people suggest disconnecting a drive, setting up a OS and then doing it for the next OS on the next drive. Others suggest partitioning one drive.

I would like to have Windows 8 on one drive and XP on the other with a boot menu at the start like my son has with his Windows 8 and Windows 7 Dual boot.

I hope someone can help.

Regards

John

Try in the reverse order , format both drives to ensure they are cleaned up.
Install XP first on the first hard drive available , which is the boot drive.
Check it boots correctly.
Then install W8 and then choose the second drive it should then overwrite the master boot record on drive 1 to allow dual booting but installs windows8 on drive 2. ( Installing xp second overwrites the MBR on the W8 type of dual boot record.)
Hope this helps.
But personally if you are using 2 completely different drives and can choose which one boots first in the bios by some means (pressing F12 key on mine), I would do so individually as per the suggestion you found on Google. Iit gives you more flexibility to install and change drives around without the sort of problems you have run into.

All the old problems are coming out of the woodwork!

It may have to do with the BIOS. The PC is newer than the XP setup you have, is, and by default, has ACPI enabled and SATA disk drivers I expect. You may need to turn these off to install/run XP, although you may also be able to download and install drivers to enable you to turn it back on later. The actual performance hit is quite small if you choose not to re-enable them.

Hi

I will first try and load Windows XP on the first Hard Drive and Windows 8 on the second Hard Drive and see what happens. I will also check on the ACPI and Sata business.

Thanks for some direction. I will let you know how I go.

Ian

Hi

I cleared both drives and started to install Windows XP on the first Hard Drive. It got to the same spot in installation where XP starts to install devices and there it gave the blue error screen, with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and provided at the bottom technical information : ***stop:0x0000000A(0x00000010,0X00000002,0x00000000,0x0x8051AA58).

Before trying the XP install with windows 8 up, I did try to disable the ACPI in the bios which crashed windows 8. It had 2 choices ACPI 2.0 Support and ACPI PIC Support. I disabled both, which was probably wrong. Windows spent time trying to recover itself.

So I assume my problem is with the devices with XP now I have started with the correct order of installation. How do I sort this problem out or find out what windows XP has issues with and correct it.

Look forward to your help.

John

First you need to go to the asus site and download the XP drivers for your motherboard

Asus M5A78L-M-LX-PLUS

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download M5A78L-M LX

Asus provide quite recent SATA, VGA, Audio, Chipset, LAN, and BIOS updates, and utilities for BIOS and general use.

They also provide an extensive Knowledge base:

You will find out how to check your bios version and how to update it to the most recent Revision.

That should keep you quite busy for a while!

Remember XP Install technology is now 11 years old - compared to Windows 8, and when installed, you will have the joys of activating it, and downloading all the updates relevant to your system offered since SP3 came out - you are using an XP SP3 installation disk, aren't you?

Hi

I appreciate your aid and will start working through your directions and let you know how I am going. By the way, I am using Windows XP Home SP1. Do you think that's what is causing me the grief.

Grief? - not specifically - it is always a challenge to retrofit an older OS on newer hardware, but SP3 improved considerably on SP1. I would recommend you download it and slipstream it into the installation .iso. I cannot say if nlite works OK on Windows 8 - it should do. Still, if you have any recordable CDs lying around, it is a way to use them up before they die.:)

One little thing - not a criticism - If you get stuck, your problem is more related to XP than Windows 8 and there are specialist forums for XP out there, with members who have more skills than I have forgotten I had.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I have just spent a bit of time creating the SP3 Windows XP CD using nLite. Impressed that this was possible. I will give this a try and get back to you.

Thanks for the heads up and I hope this gets me there.

John

Would that be XP is too far for W7 to install W8!? For it might have a pre-requisite programs from W7. This is what it came to my mind to avoid error.

Well, I had some success and a little disaster. I was able to slipstream Xp but found I could only have success with SP2. SP3 slipstreamed would not allow me to enter the product activation code. I installed Xp on my first hard drive and that went well, then I installed Windows 8 on the second hard drive, that went well. Then I was able to dual boot using the windows 8 dual boot screen. All great, but then my computer went nuts. I had just installed a new motherboard and chip. I started to have freezes, crashes, blue screens of death with windows 8. Its in getting looked at, I don't think dual booting could crash a system could it.

I will keep this link going as I will continue my efforts once I get my computer back from the repairers checking if the new board and chip could be faulty or my hard drives faulty.

More soon.

John
