Using Diskpart to clean Volume 1 and now shows nothing

All started when I went to fix my daughters laptop because of a bad virus and did a clean install using windows 8 USB. I wanted to upgrade to 10 and discovered key blocked. Long story short I went to re-partition the drive and exeuted the volume 1 clean. I then did list volume and saw nothing. Before I did that there was 4 or 5 entries. Haven't done a thing and would like (I Hope) a fix for this.

Thanks!!!

Hello BigDaddy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The "Clean" command will wipe the whole disk, not just a volume or partition as I'm afraid you just found out the hard way. :(

If you like, you could download a Windows 8.1 ISO using OPTION ONE below, create a USB flash drive with the ISO, then clean install Windows 8.1.

Brink,

Thanks for your quick response. I meant to format the partitioned space I had created. I thought that maybe their was a windows 7 key hidden because in the bios is gives you the option for win 7 or win 8.x. (Dare to dream!?) I deleted the C and D on the drive. But wouldn't let me install because the drive was locked. Did more research and I found a solution to recovering the product key from bios after having no luck with the win 7 key install (Not sure if the key recovery will work or not). I wiped it trying to format a C:\ drive but hasten my thinking and executed the command volume 1 clean where the partitioned drive I thought I was cleaning only. Half baked I realized too late.

NOOOOO!!!

Forgot to meantion it is prompting for a product key that is built in the motherboard. Any thoughts on that? Anyone?

If the laptop came with Windows 8 or 8.1 preinstalled, then it should have the product key embedded in the UEFI firmware chip.

If you install the same edition (ex: Pro or Home) that it came with, then it should auto detect the key and activate with it.

Update....

Asus x551ma has windows 8.1. That said, I installed 8.1 using the key and it said not for this edition. Now I tried using "Core" edition and no edition and still won't except my product key.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Kudos to you Brink for your help!

I Know, right?

I'm hoping tomorrow I call Microsoft and they get fixed. Well if I can figure it out before hand.

Even if I do that and it works, I still can't do a system restore without it asking for a dvd or usb image.

Are you using installation media that's the same edition and language that originally came preinstalled on the laptop?

Sorry, no I am not. Used the creation tool.

Never had to worry about having a legit key for a legit computer before with as many times as I have done this over the years.

If you like and when you have time, you might try downloading an ISO, create a USB, and use the USB to install from. Hopefully that'll work better for you.

Doing more research and I am fearing Asus neglected to add "with bing" which is not looking good at the moment.

I vaguely remember seeing Windows 8.1 with Bing in the system properties a few months back,
but had no clue that it was a version not supported for normal iso's.
I found a place to get it, downloaded copied it to a flash drive and I am now updating it.
Thanks for your help guys.
