It depends what you mean by "wipe of my windows 8.1". The Win 10 upgrade will replace the OS on your 8.1 machine but will keep all programs and data intact.

Whether it's a good or bad move is up to you. There's no hurry, you have a year to decide if you want the free upgrade. Some people really like Win 10 and can't wait to upgrade. Personally, I'm lukewarm on it and in no rush to upgrade.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
so all my software will still be there and my files in my documents if i upgrade to windows 10 ?

Yes however you should prepare by creating an image of your windows 8.1. I use Macrium Reflect Free edition will work for Images you would create a complete disk image. In addition to a disk Image I would create a file and folder back up to insure that your don't lose your data. MR Free will not do file and folder back ups but use what ever your back up routine is, to insure if thing don't go well you won't lose your data.
