Questions regarding Windows 10; Upgrade or fresh install?

Hi all, with the free windows 10 update fast approaching I'm getting a wee bit nervous.

I have 2 laptops & a desktop all due the upgrade. Both laptops are on Win7 & desktop on Win 8.1.

I'm nervous as I would never normally install an OS as an update/upgrade. I've always installed them clean from a OEM version on a formatted drive/partition.

Re-building all 3 machines from scratch is not something I relish the thought of.... and neither is running a update to install a new OS. I do want to move to 10, as all I've read is reassuring regarding performance and fixing some the quirks that us desktop users dislike about windows 8.

How are other users who have critical PCs approaching this? I use a plethora of software and I just don't trust the process of upgrading... Can anyone offer me some reassurance? Would you upgrade or wipe and do a fresh install? Is a fresh install even available?

(I'm not concerned over personal data as I've always stored this on separate drives to the OS. )

Thanks for any insight.

Cheers.

According to microsoft, users upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 VIA Windows update will keep data and settings. Not sure about Windows 7 though.

I will probably due an upgrade on one machine first, which is my laptop, and then clean installs soon after.
