Will Windows 8 run on my Pentium 4 PC

I have an Intel Pentium 4 (32-bit) Machine with a 2.80 GHz processor (with HT Technology enabled) with a 1 GB of RAM and "Intel Desktop Board D865GLC" Motherboard. So, is it possible to install and run Windows 8 (any version) on this PC configuration? I think it is possible the system requirements of Win 8 are the same as for Windows 7. I am currently win 7 without any sort of problem. :)

I say yes. I once used to run Windows 7, actually the Release Candidate at the time, on a configuration much like that and it installed fine. The problem was the shoddy graphics performance, I couldn't render video well enough.

I bet Windows 8 will easily install and have decent graphical performance. I would go for it.

So, if the Release Preview does not work, then the final release of Windows 8 (that will release in september) would work on my PC or not?

It has to work!
Boot with the DVD and do a clean install (backup your files first).

I saw it working even on pentium 3.
1GB works for me. It can be installed on minimum 512mb (clean install).

I recently saw the microsoft website and its says that Windows 8 Release Preview will work on a CPU that supports PAE
,
NX
and
SSE2. So, my PC has Pentium 4 "Northwood" (2.80 GHz) CPU, is this CPU supports all these features?

I think I had a P4 that was a Northwood build that ran Windows 7 just fine. Heck, I even played around with 7 in a VM and got it to install within 8 gigs, one processor core at 2 GHz, I think 256 MB of RAM, and 8 MB of Video RAM. It worked ok honestly. I wouldn't fret too much about small details about the CPU. I would fret a bit about the video drivers for your graphics card, but again, you'll still have decent performance.

My Acer AS10 desktop is a P4HT @ 2.8Ghz, with 1 gb of RAM and a 256 mb GeForce 5700.

It runs the Win 8 DP/CP (32-bit) like a charm (no pun intended).

The gfx drivers were a hassle, ended up using the Vista drivers, from memory.

And the Soundblaster Live! was a bit of a fiddle.

But it's positively purring along now.

The "small detail" about the CPU if it doesn't support NX is..........

......it won't run Win8 RP.

To check see my earlier post....

Good point vrosa.
The CPU was a 1GHZ Coppermine Pentium 3 (512mb ram) which has pae nx support.
So that must be the reason for it to work.

I also have a 733MHZ Coppermine but didn't tested it there (very slow in my opinion + also only 512mb) and according to this forum doesn't work. Maybe my bro will confirm this.

Thanks

Your specs are fine to run Windows 8 RP. As suggested, backup all your files, Windows 8 RP does a FULL format of the existing Operating System, and files before actual install starts.

Something extra to the story:
Here is a confirmation that CP x86 runs on Pentium 3 @ 733 mhz and 512 mb ram:
screenshot.png
It's ancient and runs very slow, metro seems to be unusable at first sight but got fixed after a reboot.
The cpu seems to have pae support! You can install VMware Player 3.1.5 which performs a cpu test during installation and it succeeds.

Very unexpected results so far 2x success with 2 pentium 3's.

But the requirements of CP and RP should be the same.

I'll try to post a cpu-z screenshot.

Win8 is supported because there is pae support (confirmed by VMware).

It's one of the oldest / weakest cpu able to (barely) run Win8. Some solid hardware, the computer's original casing (Compaq Deskpro) said "Made in England", something you don't see anymore lately.
