Win7 install on a Win8 Machine

Just in case it becomes necessary if Win10 is a bust is it possible to install Win 7 on top of Win 8.1 and get some piece of mind.

You will have to wipe the drive before installing.

Not sure your going to find any piece of mind, many win 8 computers have hardware that doesn't have window 7 drivers so you'll spend some time working around issues. Not that it can't be done but will it be worth it? I find 8.1 with classic shell every bit a good and somewhat better than win 7

Your best bet is to buy an external USB hard drive then use a program like Macrium Reflect Free to do an image backup of your existing Win 8.1 system before the upgrade to Windows 10. Then is anything goes wrong you just restore the image and you're up and running in 20 to 30 minutes.

I just dropped in to see what the expert's had to say about such. I don't have the savy to do much more than put the disk in the tray and click "go".

You should be doing backups no matter what you decide to do. That's the only reliable way to preserve your data unless you are using some kind of Cloud storage, like Microsoft OneNote (used to be OneDrive), Carbonite, MediaFire or similar. Even then that only preserves your data, not the operating system.

External hard drive and image backup is the best way to go.
