Hi. I get the error "The drive is of type GPT" while trying to install windows 8. Someone please help me it's making me crazy. I searched a lot most people said to convert GPT to MBR. Isn't it possible to install windows without converting to MBR. Someone said you should boot dvd in UEFI but I dont know how to do. In my boot setup there is no UEFI: DVD.... that I was said to choose...

What was originally on this system, Windows 7 ? I did not know you can have GPT without UEFI BIOS. If it is not UEFI then will have to convert to MBR. Not sure what you are coming from (os) what type of install was chosen, custom, upgrade. Look here will tell reasons this can happen.

How to Solve "The Selected Disk is of the GPT Partition Styl

Quote from this post: UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode (installing using the MBR partition style). -> link

Tip   Tip
Error message when you boot from the Windows installation media in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style. (see screenshot below)

That is because Windows can only be installed to MBR disk in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode, but you plan to install Windows on a GPT disk.

- Boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI Boot Mode, so you can use GPT (GUID Partition Table).
- But if you want to use MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table, then delete all partitions on the disk.

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.png

Error message when you boot from the Windows installation media in UEFI Boot Mode:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks. (see screenshot below)

As said Thread starter not seeing option in Boot screen for UEFI with disc in. As pictures above show must be trying to install when there is probably still partitions there.

Yes. Sadly I don't have UEFI version of DVD. I tried tutorial on this forum to create a UEFI bootable of my older win 7 DVD in flash memory. everything seem great and I booted in UEFI but after loading files screen bot manager gives error that it couldn't find file in windows/system/etc The error seems weird to me. Since I am installing windows why should boot manager say It can't find windows folder on my PC. any help on this?

Sadly I don't have UEFI version of DVD.

All of the Windows 7/8/8.1/10 64-bit DVD's are compatible with the UEFI Boot Mode.
All of the Windows 8/8.1/10 64-bit DVD's are compatible with the Secure Boot.

Quote from this post:

- If you are booting from a Windows 7/8 64-bit USB flash drive (FAT32 file system) in UEFI Boot Mode, then UEFI firmware run \efi\boot\bootx64.efi file. Note: This file does not exist by default in the Windows 7 installation media, so you need to create this file by using the Rufus program, if you want UEFI Boot Mode compatible Windows 7 64-bit USB flash drive.

- If you are booting from a Windows 7/8 64-bit DVD in UEFI Boot Mode, then UEFI firmware run \efi\microsoft\boot\cdboot.efi file.

I' m a bit confused here, what exactly came on this system again Windows 7 or 8 ? Seems like you were saying you trying to reinstall Windows 8 this is when problem occurred now we are talking about going back to Windows 7. If so why go back to Windows 7 and was there a reson for reinstall of OS ? Either or, as genet showed does not matter by the disc., cases it matters by the type of BIOS, UEFI or not. Follow other steps making USB bootable Flash Drive you will know when try to boot from it again.

Your right. I was on windows 8 but I have some problem with OS that I needed reinstalling it. while trying to do so I ran into problems. I thought maybe coming back to windows 7 will let me copy my files to a some where safe then format my laptop disk. That was the whole story. I will try your suggestions and see what can I do.

Be more helpful if we knew exact Make and model of this laptop or fill in system specs here completely in your profile.
What files are you speaking of from laptop, documents, software, pictures, etc... ?
Mattering to what state system is in now, to copy files from disk.

O.k. so trying the reinstall of Windows 8, failed with that error message, what happened afterwards, able to still use laptop ?
See nothing in your model in it's Manual showing UEFI BIOS.
Could of just done a Windows 8 reset or refresh.

Well if formatted the drive, only possible way to recover anything from the drive would be data recovery service, which i believe will cost you.
Always backup important files all the time on external device. Your welcome, still here if need us.
Just need a Windows disc or ISO of windows follow tutorials of making a bootable USB Flash drive, listed before.
If have a Windows 8 disc do not need make USB bootable drive of course.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html
Use Rufus as suggested when follow this tutorial instead of Windows tool http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2227-create-bootable-usb-dvd-windows-8-iso.html
