Maybe the hard drive was going bad - if so, installing Win8 wouldn't help. You should be able to start the Windows install from a bootable CD or USB stick. But if the HD is bad you won't get much further. What are you using to install Win8.1, a CD or USB?

When you turn on the computer does the BIOS screen show? If yes, than you should be able to direct it boot from the USB (do you know how to make a "bootable" Win 8.1 installation disk?)

I think this is because you are selecting a partition, you should be selecting the disk Win 8 is UEFI and it needs to set up the partitions itself to boot.

When I clean install, I delete the first Recovery partition, the EFI partition, the hidden 128 MB partition, and the Windows partition. Then I just leave it unallocated, click next, and Windows creates all the partitions it needs automatically. I have my Data, that I don't want to lose on a separate partition that I don't touch.

I didn't know this, so windows install will only format and partition the unused space? and not mess with another partition on the same disk?

No, you should be able to install to an already formatted partition, even one with Windows already installed on it. That's when you end up with a Windows.old. Or do an upgrade install. Windows 8.1 and 10 use the same partitions but they may vary in size. On a clean install, it only takes a couple of extra mouse clicks to wipe them all out and let Windows create new ones the size it wants where it wants. So I do it. For what ever reason, it looks like the OP's Windows 8 doesn't like what Windows 10 did to the drive. Cleaning out all the Windows partitions might get the install to work is all. His partition table may be messed up or something. I don't like having any leftovers from a previous OS. I keep my DATA, the stuff I don't want to lose, on a separate partition or drive. My User folders like documents, Pictures, etc. I just don't touch that partition during the install. I have it all backed up anyway, but it saves me having to copy it back to the drive on a clean install. Then all I have to do is change a few folder location settings for Windows to find it.
