Hi

Now that news has arrived re windows 10 downloads in July can anyone please tell me the best way to clean install and keep a back up copy on USB as I usually fail to keep a copy and then have problems if I need to reinstall. I know this has been stated many times with windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 etc so please take pity on an `olden` .

Have a windows 8.1 disc or is it OEM came on system, recovery partition ? Some will make a image backup, using macrium reflect Macrium Software
Sure some here have more solutions for this and other ways as i can see your concerns.

The laptop I have was shipped with Win 7 preinstalled and have updated if that's the correct word with Win 8 and 8.1 Pro 64 bit so want to get it right this time. My PC had XP then Vista, Win 7 and now 8.1 Pro 32 bit.

My recommendation is to use Macrium Reflect to do an image backup of your setup to an external drive. Then, use the option to create a rescue boot CD/USB. Those will give you the means to completely restore your setup.

As to clean install, the information released by MS so far on the Win10 upgrade notification does not indicate any option for clean install other than AFTER you do the inplace upgrade.

most likely windows 10 rtm will be an inplace upgrade.. Just like current version 10130

was able to clean install 10130 by snagging the install.esd from the "C:\$Windows.~BT\sources" folder

and then creating a new setup media iso

:ditto: I would say that too, just like time when we went from win 8 to 8.1 upgrade.
