"Darn" Win 8

I had to replace the motherboard in my backup desktop. I couldn't get the same Z77 motherboard (it was discontinued) but I did get a Z77 from another motherboard vendor. I have a triple boot, Win 7/Win 8.1/Win 10 (all on separate drives) on that machine. I thought Win 7 would be a problem since its an OEM version, but it was a breeze and just had to install the drivers for the different motherboard hardware. It even activated without problems.

Win 8 was a different story. When I first booted to Win 8 it came up with setting up hardware but never got any further (after an hour). I tried a couple of things including startup repair and it came back with a message that it couldn't repair it. After several other attempts (and about 4 hours), I decided to start over and do a clean install. That worked however, the Win 8 Pro (full license not an OEM) required a call to Microsoft activation, reading all the numbers and keying in new numbers to activate!

The 8.1 update was installed this morning.

As there was nothing but the basic Win 10 pre-release install, I did a clean install on Win 10.
