I haven't tried this yet but maybe later this wek when I get some spare time.
If you have a phone with a separate micro sd card of large enough capacity could you install windows to go on it and then use this as a USB ext drive on a laptop to boot Windows to go. These cards are now available up to 32 GB which is PLENTY for a small W8 installation.
In theory it should work -- but I've never tried the approach with a micro sd card. The micro sd card appears as an exte drive to the laptop so if the laptop can boot from a usb drive then it should work similarly to a USB stick.
I can see the advantages to having a portable Windows OS on a smartphone internal memory card. (Note the Windows OS will be booted on to a laptop --not the smart phone itself).
It won't work from a normal card since I am not aware of any bios that can boot from the integrated card reader.
Perhaps it can work if the card reader is attached to the system by USB, but even that is doubtful since the boot loader probably won't know how to look at the card reader as a device. This is certainly the way to try though, if any.
It seems as though almost all people trying to boot from SD card aren't able to and many are resorting to workarounds. There seems to be some that actually can do it, obviously depending on the hardware though.

Actually I was hoping that the smart phone itself sends to Windows that this is a "USB Disk" since the smart phone itself has to "switch to Disk or USB mode" so Windows might be "poodlefaked" into thinking the sd card in the phone is either a "bona" USB stick or an external usb drive.
I don't have any trouble using Winamp or other apps to play music on a PC from the smart phone's external micro sd card so the PC can obviously retrieve data from the card supplied to it by the phone. (And by normal Windows applicatiuons -- not "Synching" data or anything like that --just using the smart phone as a "bog standard external USB drive".
If an sd card can be booted from an external card reader then it should in theory be easier with the card still inside the smart phone as I assume the OS in the smart phone will sort out the "Pass thru" between the SD card and Windows.
I'll have a go with this stuff later this weekend when I get some time.
